Pfeiffer to Receive NCI Public Service Award
Marcia Pfeiffer, Ph.D., president of St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, has been selected to receive North County Incorporated’s (NCI) Public Service Award. The 2014 award recipients will be honored at NCI’s 37th Annual Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel.
The Public Service Awards will be presented to outstanding individuals, elected, appointed or employed by a public body whose long-time service has had a positive impact on the community and/or public body they serve.
“I am certainly flattered to receive this award from North County Incorporated,” said Pfeiffer. “I am grateful for the support and encouragement I receive at St. Louis Community College to get involved in community activities as I have been able to serve in a number of different areas.”
Other awards that will be presented by NCI include the Business Development Award, Community Development Award, Elmer Belsha Leadership Award and Special Recognition Award.
Pfeiffer was named Florissant Valley president in December 2002, after serving as interim campus president the previous 11 months. She joined STLCC in 1980 as an instructor in the food service management program at Florissant Valley and became the chair of the Home Economics department in 1986. In 1993 she was appointed the district’s Tech Prep coordinator, then became associate dean of Florissant Valley’s Business and Human Development division before her appointment as the campus executive dean in 2000.
Through her ongoing commitment to incorporating communication into her strategic thinking and daily operations, Pfeiffer has successfully positioned the college at the forefront of several regional and national initiatives, including life sciences, manufacturing technology and deaf communication studies. She has also personally facilitated and maintained relationships with several community organizations and businesses. These partnerships are important in developing academic leaders, for training the emerging workforce, and for strengthening the economic base of local communities.
In addition to the many duties of president, Pfeiffer was the institution’s representative for the League for Innovation in Community College. She has been recognized for her commitment to the community college mission locally, regionally and nationally through her involvement with the league, the Missouri Community College Association and MoBIO.
Over the years, Pfeiffer’s volunteer activities have focused on dietetics and youth people. She has spent several years serving in leadership roles in the St. Louis Dietetic Association (president, 1982-83) and in the Missouri Dietetic Association (president 1988-89, and then was a delegate from Missouri to the American Dietetic Association). Pfeiffer’s American Dietetic Association activities have focused on education, where she served as a site visitor for the accreditation process and on the accreditation commission. She has also served on several other dietetic committees.
Pfeiffer has also spent a number of years involved in youth activities, fostered by the activities of her daughters. She coached soccer with CYC; was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered on a variety of school committees both at Annunciation Grade School and Nerinx Hall High School. Pfeiffer has served on the Nerinx Hall Board of Directors since 2002. She also has served on the A+ Advisory Boards for Hazelwood and Ferguson Florissant school districts. She currently serves as the vice chair of the North Start District of the Boy Scout Council (nominating committee chair and member at large in 2010).
She represents the college on the County Workforce Investment Board and served on the Missouri Biotechnology Association Board of Directors (Executive Committee since 2008; secretary from 2008-10 and as the organization’s treasurer). Pfeiffer also served on United Way of Greater St. Louis’ allocation panels for child care and Catholic charities.
