Hazelwood Central Ladies and Men as well as the men of Hazelwood East all played in separate Basketball Tournaments last week and all made it to championship games only to each end up taking home second-place trophies.

Parkway North won two of those tournaments as the Viking Ladies defeat the Central Lady Hawks, at the Parkway Central Tournament, and the Viking Men defeat the East Spartans to win the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament. Meanwhile the Central Hawk Men finished second to Lafayette in the Ameritime Classic held at Missouri Baptist University.

PARKWAY CENTRAL GIRLS TOURNAMENT — The championship game, won by Parkway North, 52-40, was a tale of two halves as Parkway North outscored Hazelwood Central 38-17 in the second half after the Hawk Ladies led at halftime, 23-14. Hazelwood Central’s Jessica Jordan and Parkway North’s Alesia Sutton each scored 16 points. Jordan and her Central teammate, Zaria Valle, each pulled down 11 rebounds.

It was the second straight year that Parkway North defeated Hazelwood Central in the championship game of the Parkway Central Tournament. Last year Parkway North won 57-52. It was also the second tournament Hazelwood Central girls played this year that ended up with a second-place finish, as they lost to Incarnate Word Academy in the Visitation Tournament.

Hazelwood Central is now competing in the Webster Groves Winter Challenge which began Wednesday, Feb. 5, against Fort Zumwalt West and ends Saturday, Feb. 8.

FORT ZUMWALT NORTH BOYS TOURNAMENT — Parkway North won the championship game over Hazelwood East, 65-63, as the Vikings outscored the Spartans 30-22 in the second and third quarters combined to break a 17-17 tie after the first quarter. East outscored Parkway North 24-18 in the fourth quarter but the Spartans fell two points short. East won the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament last year.

Brandon Brice and Jimmy Jones, teammates on the Hazelwood East Football team, each scored 22 points while Parkway North was led by Edin Bracic, who  had 20.

AMERITIME CLASSIC — After winning four straight titles Hazelwood Central Men have now ended up taking second place for the second year in a row. This time Lafayette defeated Hazelwood Central 44-41 to win the tournament hosted by Parkway West and played at Missouri Baptist University. Hazelwood Central had already won the St. John Vianney-Boeckman Invitational and the Meramec Holiday Tournament.

Lafayette outscored Hazelwood Central, in a tight-scoring contest, 39-31 in the final three quarters combined after Hazelwood Central led 10-5 a the end of the first quarter. Demarco Buchanan led the Hawks by scoring 12 points while Lafayette’s Nate Messer led all scorers with 17.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL LADIES — The Hawk ladies got to the Parkway Central Tournament championship game by rolling over Normandy 73-23 then defeating the host Parkway Central Colts, 45-39. Against Normandy 11 Hawks scored led by Jordan, who scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Hawks led 42-8 at halftime and coasted from there.

HAZELWOOD EAST MEN — In the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament Hazelwood East got to the championship game by defeating Wentzville-Holt, 96-67, and Suburban North Conference rival Pattonville, 55-49. Hazelwood East, who led Holt 48-24 at halftime, had three players scoring over 20 points, led by Jordan Henderson with 26. Against Pattonville, whom East plays Feb. 13, the Spartans, led by Brice’s 15 points, outscored the Pirates 48-35 the last three quarters.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL MEN — The Hawks got to their sixth consecutive Ameritime Classic Championship game by defeating Gateway STEM 80-63 and tourney host Parkway West, 58-40. Marcus George, against Gateway STEM, led the Hawks with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Against Parkway West Ranell Crossland led the Hawks by scoring 13 points.

NORTH TECH REPEATS THE ORCHARD FARM TOURNEY TITLE two weeks ago by defeating McCluer South-Berkeley (60-37), Confluence Prep Academy Charter (68-48) and Winfield (67-52).
