With fewer Catholic parishes you wold think that looking for a Friday fish fry in North County could be a problem. It’s not. Several churches and other groups offer fish fries throughout Lent until Easter. Some continue the tradition year-round with monthly fries.

St. Ferdinand is one of the oldest fish fries in the Florissant area. At St. Ferdinand, the fish fry is not just a Lenten event, but a year round fundraiser. Several volunteers prepare the fish every Friday and serve it from 3-7 p.m. In addition to the traditional fried cod, St. Ferdinand also offers baked cod and two kinds of catfish, fried and Cajun. The church also offers shrimp. You can also pick up a whole pie for dessert. The church offers take-out by the pound or by the dinner.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, in Ferguson, offers a drive-through for their fish fry. The church serves from 4-7 throughout Lent. The church offers fried cod every week, and also has a catch of the day, which changes weekly. So far, the catch of the day was salmon one week and catfish the next week.

In addition to the standard side dishes, the church offer applesauce, pizza and macaroni bites. What are macaroni bites? They are fried macaroni, according to a woman at the church adding “they’re probably high cholesterol, but they’re delicious.”

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne has been in the fish fry business since it was St. Thomas Apostle. The church hosts its fish fries year round on the first Friday of the month and every Friday in Lent. The church offers fried fish, spaghetti, and hush puppies. In addition, they have a large selection of home made desserts. You can order a take-out dinner, or buy the fish by the pound.

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 4105 also has a fish fry every Friday during Lenten at 410 rue Saint Francois in Old Town Florissant.

Other fish fries in the area include: Our lady of Guadeloupe, Florissant General Baptist Church which offers home delivery from 10 a.m-1 p.m. by calling 313-6080 or 795-7310 (regular hours are 4-7 p.m.), American Legion Post 444 at 17090 Old Jamestown Road, and the Florissant Elks Lodge, 16400 New halls Ferry Road.
