You can discover nature with Eagle Days programs across the region or enjoy eagle-viewing on your own. Eagle Days events include live captive-eagle programs, exhibits, activities, videos and guides with spotting scopes. Be sure to dress for winter weather and don’t forget cameras and binoculars.

In addition to the planned events, there are also many places for fabulous self-guided winter eagle viewing. Visit them early in the morning to see eagles flying and fishing and watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water’s edge. Some eagle viewing sites are listed here:

• Lock & Dam 25 east of Winfield, Missouri, off of Highway 79
• Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, south of I-270 off of Riverview Drive in St. Louis, MO (parking lot available on the Illinois side of the Bridge off of Route 3)
• Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area, 301 Riverlands Way, just east of West Alton, Missouri.

The World Bird Sanctuary will be bringing a live Bald Eagle for the public to view up close. Be sure to bring your camera. After this personal encounter you can pick up an official All Around Alton Eagle Watcher’s Guide and set off on your own along the Great River Road to see eagles in their natural habitat.

Head out to Pere Marquette Lodge where you can not only be personally introduced to our nation’s most majestic symbol, but also shop unique vendor booths, grab a bite to eat in the restaurant and enjoy time with friends and family. The festival will feature live music and entertainment by the World Bird Sanctuary as they showcase the Bald Eagle and several other raptor species in their Masters of the Sky Show at 1:30 p.m. Show up a little early and meet a Bald Eagle up close and personal. Want to know the tips and tools to catch an amazing shot of one of those majestic birds? Come to the Tower and pick up pointers from a local expert photographer. There will be two 1-hour long sessions, the first at 1:00 p.m. and the second at 3:00 p.m.

Eagle Watch and Trail Walk. Free and for all ages. Saturday, Jan. 19,  11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Fort Belle Fontaine Park. 13300 Bellefontaine Road.

Spend a day with the Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park observing the bald eagles along the Missouri River. A live eagle, several birds of prey, and a naturalist from the World Bird Sanctuary will be on site from noon until 2 p.m. A guided hike will be provided along the three-mile trail. Hikers and cyclists are welcome to take the trek on their own throughout the day. Refreshments will be served. Be sure to dress for the weather and meet at the Grand Staircase.

Eagles aren’t the only birds of prey in the area. Join the Confluence Tower as it hosts the TreeHouse Wildlife Center to learn about other birds that call the Riverbend area home with displays and educational activities throughout the day.

Eagle Days in Clarksville Missouri. Free for all ages. Saturday, Jan. 26, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Clarksville, Missouri, on Missouri Highway 79 halfway between Hannibal and St. Louis, Lock and Dam #24.

The World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis and the Missouri Department of Conservation will present live eagle programs every hour at the Apple Shed at the south edge of town. Spotting scopes, naturalists, and warming bonfires will be available at Riverfront Park. Come early to watch the birds feed in the Mississippi River and enjoy the wonderful eateries and shops of Clarksville.
