By Jim Wieners

In their 10th year of existence and is looking for their first state title in any sports Trinity Catholic High School Boys Soccer is coming off a Class One, District Four championship Oct. 29-30 playing on their home field.

Going into the Nov. 6 home sectional against 15-5-1 John Burroughs Trinity has a 12-10 overall record, 5-1 in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small School Division. Trinity has gone up and down this year with an early-season four-game losing streak followed by a six-game win streak. Trinity, however, has struggled with teams with 12 or more wins as the Titans are 2-8.

“We’ve been inconsistent,” said head coach and athletic director Vince Drake. ”Hopefully, we’re putting things together at the right time,” after Trinity defeated North Tech, 3-0, and Whitfield, 4-1. Against North Tech on Oct, 29, a team consisting of transfers from other St. Louis County high schools and have no freshmen, the Titans got two goals from Mike Thiemet while Jacob Prater and Fausto Tommasi shared goalkeeping shutout duties. Against Whitfield on Oct. 30, a seven-time state champion Trinity secured their seventh district boys soccer title in 10 years thanks to two goals each from Dan Donovan and Cody Hudson while Mark Skrivan had two assists.

In the Trinity-Whitfield game Trinity scored first with 1:35 left in the first half. The Titans took less than a half-minute of the second half to score their second before Whitfield cut into the lead, 2-1 seven and a half minutes later.  Trinity got their two-goal lead back with 19:58 left and added more insurance with their fourth goal with 18:07 left. Whitfield tried to get back in the game with 6:10 left but the penalty kick went high and wide right.

Trinity or John Burroughs will play Saturday, Nov. 10 against Festus-St. Pius X or Bayless, time to be announced. Trinity, had they defeated John Burroughs, will play at Festus-St. Pius X or will host Bayless for the right to play Nov.16-17 in Blue Springs, Mo.
