Steelers’ Carey Davis Returns to Alma Mater To Present Championship Rings at Central

Carey Davis, a 1998 graduate of Hazelwood Central High School, and fullback for the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, returned to his high school alma mater recently to take part in a special ceremony for the school’s varsity football team.

During half-time of a basketball game between Hazelwood Central and DeSmet Jesuit High School, Davis was introduced to the crowd by John Pukala, activities director at Hazelwood Central. Pukala congratulated him for being on the winning Super Bowl team, and asked him to help present championship rings to the football team, who won the Missouri Class 6 state title in November 2008.

Standing at center court, the players waited anxiously to hear their names called over the microphone. As they accepted their rings, they were greeted by Davis. A few paused for the opportunity to take a picture with him.

After the ceremony, Davis was swarmed by a group of school-age boys and a few adult fans asking for autographs. He quietly and graciously signed various scraps of paper, including the bill of a hat, and posed for pictures. He also did an impromptu interview with a local television sports anchor, saying that football has made him “the man that he is.”
