It’s that time of year, when volunteers work to fill empty shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, hygiene items and notes of encouragement for needy kids overseas.

The boxes are delivered by Operation Christmas Child in the world’s largest Christmas project.   In 2012, Operation Christmas Child expects to reach a milestone—collecting and delivering shoe boxes to more than 100 million children since 1993.

This year-round project is coming to its peak, as local businesses, churches and schools prepare to collect gift-filled shoe boxes during National Collection Week, Nov. 14-21. Volunteers can drop off their shoe box gifts at one of fourteen sites in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

In North County, boxes can be dropped off at Parker Road Baptist Church, 2675 Parker Rd., 831-6671. Call for drop-off hours. The coordintor is James McCaughan.

Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, uses whatever means necessary to reach children around the world with these gifts, including sea containers, trucks, trains, airplanes, boats, camels and dog sleds.
