Trinity Catholic Adds Girls Swimming; McCluer North Seeking Hoop Repeat

BY JIM WIENERS

In 2003 St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and Rosary High Schools was merged by the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The merged high school, Trinity Catholic, has been housed in the now former Rosary High. Since the merger Trinity has added Wrestling, a sport that did not exist before the merger. Starting Dec. 5 Trinity will compete for the first time ever in Girls Swimming and Diving.

Trinity will compete in their first meet at the site of the Missouri state championships, the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex. Trinity will compete against Archdiocesan Athletic Association rival St. Dominic, Wentzville-Timberland and Fort Zumwalt East, which just opened their doors last August. Trinity will have their home meets at the James Eagan Civic Center, which is also home to McCluer North, and Trinity will have their first home meet Dec. 10 against AAA rival Rosati-Kain.

While Girls Swimming begins interscholastic competition Dec. 3, Basketball and Wrestling began competition Nov. 19 except for North County Christian School, who is not a Missouri State High School Activities Association.

In Boys Basketball, McCluer North, Class Five Boys State Champion last March, returns nine players from last year’s roster including Torres Roundtree, who is heading for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale after the 2007-08 school year, and Femi John, who is heading for Saint Louis University.
In Girls Basketball Hazelwood East, Class Five runner up to Liberty last March and fourth in state two years ago, has at least three returning starters — Channon Haywood, Robniesha Wood and Jantell McNeil — but must replace Daliela Thomas, who graduated. Meanwhile, Incarnate Word Academy, who won the Class Five Girls State title in 2006 and who had a run of three straight state tournament semifinals appearances (2004-06) snapped last year with a Class Five, started the 2007-08 season with three straight wins.

In Wrestling about 11 wrestlers from Florissant Valley area high schools that compete last year in the Missouri State Class Four championships last February in Columbia were underclassmen and have a chance to return this February. That includes these state medallists — Kevin Knopf, McCluer North, second at 189 pounds; Dominique Thornton, Hazelwood East, sixth at 145; and Terrell Smart, Hazelwood Central, sixth at 140.

High School Club Hockey opened the season at the beginning of November and there are only two teams but each play in separate associations. Hazelwood Central, which competes with mostly Illinois high school clubs in the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association, has lost their first five games. Hazelwood West, which competes in the Mid-States Club Hockey Association, has won two out of their first three games prior to last Monday.
