Hazelwood Central Track & Field Teams Sweep Class Four State

By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood Central saved their best for last as the Hawks sweep the Boys and Girls Class Four Missouri State Activities Association Track & Field Championships May 25 in Jefferson City at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

It is the second time Hazelwood Central won both Boys and Girls Track & Field in the same year. The only other time was in 1987, in Class 4A, the first state title for both teams. Boys Track & Field have won five state titles and is the first team among the Hazelwood Schools to win four straight (and counting) while the Girls have won three state titles.

The athletes that were keys to a Hawk sweep were Marcus Davis and Ashley Henderson.  Davis was a State Champion in the 400-Meter Dash and was on the State Champion 4×200 Relay team. Henderson won State titles in the 100- and 200-Meter Dashes and was on the State Championship 4×200 Relay team that helped a Boys-Girls sweep in the relay event.

The state titles were the only state trophies Hazelwood Central won in 2012-2013. The Hawks were a Class Five Girls Basketball Quarterfinalist.
