Three distinguished Florissant Valley Alumni will be inducted into the Florissant Valley Alumni Hall-of-Fame at an awards dinner on Friday, Nov. 2. Mike O’Mara (’80), Kellie Suttle (’93) and Josh Mosley (’94) have been selected as this year’s Hall-of-Fame inductees.
The Alumni Hall-of-Fame was created in 1982 to recognize the accomplishments of some of Florissant Valley’s most outstanding Alumni. Forty-one individuals have been honored with the award since its inception, including Fox 2 News anchorman Dan Gray, former St. Louis mayor Vincent Schoemel and renowned sports artist Walt Spitzmiller.
This year’s inductees all started at Florissant Valley and have went on to be successful in their careers.
Michael O’Mara attended Florissant Valley from 1978-80, where he was named an All-American in varsity soccer. He went on to play professional soccer for the Kansas City Comets and St. Louis Steamers from 1981-84. In 1983, he earned a B.A. in communications from Saint Louis University. He has worked for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562 since 1984. He started as a journeyman pipefitter and currently serves as the assistant business manager.
In 2000, O’Mara was elected to the St. Louis County Council as the 4th District Representative. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the St. Patrick’s Center and previously served on the Missouri Training and Employment Council. A graduate of McCluer North High School, O’Mara has been a life long resident of St. Louis. He lives in North County with his wife Carol and his son James and daughter Maddie.
Kellie Suttle graduated from Florissant Valley in 1993. Raised in St. Peters, Suttle won the Missouri High School long jumping title in 1990. At Florissant Valley, she continued with long jumping and placed 6th in the JUCO nationals in 1993. She transferred to Arkansas State and graduated with a B.A. degree in communications in 1996. While working as a gymnastics instructor at a local facility in Jonesboro, she was hired by Earl Bell to coach pole vaulting at his top vault training center. She went on to excel in the sport, winning the 1998 U.S. outdoor championship and 2006 U.S. indoor championship. She currently resides in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Josh Mosley graduated from Florissant Valley in 1994. He is currently an associate professor of fine arts, animation and digital media in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design and a fellow at the American Academy in Rome. He received his M.A. and B.A. degrees in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work, titled “dread” is currently juried into the prestigious La Biennale di Venezia which runs through Nov. 21 in Venice, Italy.
He has also been a recipient of the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize, the Pew Fellowship in the Arts, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship. He currently lives in Philadelphia with his wife and son Jasper.
The Hall-of-Fame Awards Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Multipurpose Room. The dinner is open to the public. Tickets are currently on sale in the cashier’s office. The cost is $25.
