Grayling Tobias Retires as

Hazelwood Superintendent

In a brief message, the Hazelwood School District announced the retirement of Superintendent Grayling Tobias. Tobias had been on a 30-day medical leave beginning April 13, then was placed on paid administrative leave May 19.

There has been widespread speculation especially on social media that there may be other reasons besides health related ones. However, nothing tangible has been forthcoming. There were reports that some board members had a put a lot pressure on Tobias forcing his leave.

The Hazelwood Board of Education has approved his retirement and has appointed Ingrid Clark-Jackson as interim superintendent for the 2015-16 school year.

Tobias has worked in the field of education for over 30 years. Since 2002, he served as assistant superintendent for learning in Hazelwood. In addition, he served as the interim superintendent for 10 weeks in 2012, after Steve Price was removed from the position, then he was hired for the permanent position. Tobias is also a member of the Ferguson Commission.

Clark-Jackson had planned to retire this summer but has agreed to postpone that plan and serve as interim. The district indicated that the search for a permanent superintendent will be announced later.
