North County Christian Dominates MCSAA Spring Sports, Wins 4 Titles

By Jim Wieners

In 11 years as Athletic Director at North County Christian School John Davis, in a school article said he never seen or experienced anything like the school winning four Missouri Christian State Athletic Association titles in his trip to Joplin, May 3-5. And Davis said he had made 33 trips to Joplin

North County Christian has made an immediate impact in Track and Field. In only their third year of existence the Girls team won their third straight while the Boys won their second straight. Boys Golf, who won MCSAA titles in 2008 and 2009, came home a month ago with another title. Baseball was a winner to as the Crusaders won their first MCSAA title since 1999.

None of those four teams play their home contests on campus. In fact there is no track and no baseball field. On the other hand Girls Soccer has a home field on campus but there was no team a year after winning the MCSAA title shorthanded.

This wrapped up a very successful year for a school that, in a 50-year history, is an affiliated registered member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association. This comes after Boys Soccer wins in the fall, Cheerleaders qualifying for UCA Nationals while winning state and conference honors for the second year in a row in the winter, Girls Basketball took second and Boys Basketball took third. No mention of where Girls Volleyball finished in the MCSAA but must have been good.

About 2-3 weeks before the MSHSAA had their Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City NCCS was dominating the MCSAA Track and Field Athletes. Boys won eight out of 18 events and scored a whopping 203.7 points and their closest pursuers ended up 43.5 behind NCCS. The Girls won four events yet they were on a roll when they scored 175 points while their closest pursuers finished no more than 35.5 behind NCCS.

John Mark Worth won four boys events, the maximum allowed. Worth won at 800, 1,600 and 3,200 Meters and was on the winning 4×800 Relay team. On the Girls side Maddie Kirk and Sarah Bolton both were on two winning relay teams and each won an individual event (not mentioned here).

About 10 days before MHSAA competed on four different courses in the state NCCS dominated in MCSAA Boys Golf won the MCSAA state tournament by 11 strokes, gaining seven to the lead after holding a four stroke lead on the first day of the tournament. Six golfers, including three that would not have competed in the MSHSAA because they were seventh and eighth graders, finished in the top 10 including junior Tommy Shults, who finished fourth.

Baseball win-loss record for the season was not available but NCCS dominated the first three games as the Crusaders won by an average of over 16 runs per game. The championship game against TRCAA rival Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis went extra innings after NCCS tied it in the seventh but three innings later NCCS had to overcome a two run deficit. After a play at the plate that kept the NCCS deficit at two (actual score not available) the Crusaders scored three to win it including a bases loaded walk that scored the tying run and a short sacrifice fly and a wild throw home that brought in the game-winner.
