Incarnate Word Still Unbeaten In District Soccer; Streak Reaches 31

By Jim Wieners

In 1985 the Missouri State High School Activities Association started sanctioning the State Girls Soccer Championships and Incarnate Word Academy had won two district titles without MSHSAA sponsorship.

This year is the 29th year for the MSHSAA Girls Soccer Championships but Incarnate now has secured 31 straight district titles, 29 in MSHSAA. Despite their enrollment class dropping from Class Three to Class Two IWA won District Five  as tourney host and the number two seed by defeating Ladue-Horton Watkins, 4-1, and top-seeded Mary Institute/Country Day School, 2-0. IWA has won an MSHSAA record nine state titles but last won in 2009.

In the win over Ladue Kelsey Murphy scored two goals and had an assists while Elly Freesmeier had two assists to go along with a goal. Incarnate dominated play against Ladue but Fran Shannon had 21 saves for Ladue and kept Incarnate from an even bigger rout

Meanwhile MICDS was looking to win their first district title but IWA (13-6-3 prior to May 21) got the game’s only goals from Melanie Donaldson and Megan Whitehead while Makayla Hussong stopped nine MICDS shots to preserve the shutout. MICDS goalkeeper Elizabeth Lewis stopped 12 IWA shots.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL WON CLASS THREE, DISTRICT THREE, held at Florissant Civic Center Park, with a pair of shutouts. Hazelwood Central took only 70 minutes to whitewash Riverview Gardens  10-0 then edged tourney host McCluer North 1-0. It is the first district title since 2008 for Hazelwood Central, the 13th since 1987, and has not won a state title. Hazelwood Central took third in state in 2001.

In the rout over Riverview Gardens Devan Jones led Hazelwood Central (9-12 prior to May 21) with four goals, Alexis Turner had four assists and Bailey Chadduck had three assists. In the win over McCluer North Jones set up Turner who scored the game’s only goal in the second half while Alexis Chappelle, who helped the Girls Basketball team get to the Class Five Quarterfinals, stopped seven McCluer North shots.

LUTHERAN NORTH WON CLASS ONE, DISTRICT FIVE their third in a row, their fourth since 2009 and prior to May 21 LHSN has not won a game after districts. Lutheran North (9-13 prior to May 21) won easily over two Public High League teams, 10-0 over Northwest Academy of Law and 7-1 over Metro.
