Hazelwood East Takes District Football Break, Visits Rival Hazelwood Central

BY JIM WIENERS

Hazelwood East Football is in a five-team, round robin football district, Class Five, District Two, where all but four districts in the 11-man sport have four teams.
After opening Class Five, District Two play last Saturday with a 41-21 Homecoming/Senior Day win over Wentzville Holt East takes a break from MSHSAA district football to play a team inside their own district, the Hazelwood School District. The Spartans (5-1 overall, 4-0 Suburban North Conference, 1-0 +13 District) visits arch rival Hazelwood Central (3-3, 2-1) Saturday 1 p.m. The Spartans hold a 20-19 lead over Central (18-15 in non-playoff games) but the Hawks have won the last two years.

With a number of track athletes including members of the Class Four Boys State Champion 4×200-Meter relay team, East head coach Corey describes Central as “very fast” and “very explosive.” However, being on the losing end of last Friday’s Jefferson City homecoming game (44-7), the Hawks, under first-year head coach Richard Nixon, “are going to be coming out for blood,” said Johnson.

Last Saturday against Holt junior quarterback Eric Brown completed 11 out of 14 passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns, two to senior tight end David Cannon. “It is always good to get a (Class Five) District win.” said Johnson.

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT TWO play continues this Friday at 7 p.m. as McCLUER NORTH (5-1 overall and SNC, 1-0 +8 District) visits Wentzville-Holt (3-3 overall, 0-1 -13 District) while McCLUER (3-3 overall and SNC, 0-1 -8 District) visits Troy Buchanan (1-5 overall, 0-0 District). Last Saturday McCluer North, with three touchdown runs by Damonte Bell, continue their dominance over McCluer (31-6 in the series) as the Stars won the homecoming game, 21-13.
