IWA Swimmer Wins 2 State Titles; Basketball Seeks Record Ninth

Incarnate Word Academy, an all-Girls high school, has a history of state team championships, beginning with Volleyball, followed by Soccer and, currently, with Basketball.

Individual State titles, on the other hand, are another story. That is until now. Sophomore swimmer Ellie Wehrmann won two Class One championships Feb. 16 at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex.

Wehrmann won IWAs first individual state title was in the 200-yard Freestyle as she swam the championship final in 1:51.01. She also had the best preliminary time of 1:51.571 on Feb. 15. Prior to state Wehrmann swam the 200 Freestyle in 1:52.3 at the Metro Women’s Athletic Association Championships Feb. 3 at Mary Institute-Country Day School, which bettered her winning time of 1:52.43 on Jan. 20 at the City of Roses Invitational at Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Wehrmann won her second state title by swimming the 100-yard Freestyle in 51.73 seconds. She had the best time in the preliminaries by swimming in 52.051 seconds. Her best qualifying time came in the Jan. 20 City of Roses Invitational by winning the 100 Freestyle in 52.87 seconds.

Wehrmann teamed up with junior Emily Schroeder, senior Ellie Haman and freshman Jordan Hodges to swim the 200-yard Freestyle to a 10th-place finish (1:44.16). Schroeder was 10th in the 200-yard Individual Medley and 14th in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:28.25). With 64 points IWA finished 13th in Class One, won by Springfield-Glendale (195).

BASKETBALL — CLASS 4, DISTRICT 7 — About seven/tenths of a mile southeast of the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex is Fort Zumwalt East High School, where Incarnate Word begins their quest for a Missouri State High School Activities Association record ninth Basketball title. After playing Thursday, Feb. 22, in a 6 p.m. game at Ursuline Academy, with an outright MWAA title that goes with a win, the top-seeded Red Knights begin their State quest March 1 at 4 p.m. They will play the winner of the Feb. 26, 4:30 game, St. Charles West or the host Zumwalt East Lions. The other Feb. 26 games include Riverview Gardens playing St. Charles High at 6 p.m. and McCluer High against Jennings at 7:30, with the two winners playing March 1 at 5:30.

The March 1 winners play March 3 at 5:30 for the District Seven title and the right to play the District Eight Champion March 6, 6 p.m. at Francis Howell Central in Cottlevillle

IWA, prior to playing Ursuline, is 20-5 overall, 6-0 in the MWAA, with two wins each over St. Joseph’s Academy and Whitfield. The Red Knights are 1-1 against Parkway North and already owns a win over Ursuline.

   BOYS BASKETBALL — Riverview Gardens opens Class Four, District Seven Feb. 27 with a 5:30 p.m. game against Zumwalt East with the winner playing against top-seeded Jennings March 1 at 7 p.m. In addition, McCluer plays St. Charles West Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. with the winner taking on second-seeded St. Charles High March 1 at 8:30. The March 1 winners meet March 3 at 7:15 for the right to play the District Eight Champion March 6, 7:45 at Francis Howell Central.
