Through the first week of January of 2018, Hazelwood Central and Trinity Catholic Boys Basketball teams have each won seven in a row and each enjoyed the Christmas break by winning tournaments.
Hazelwood Central won the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament played at the Meramec campus of St. Louis Community College while Trinity Catholic won the Mary Institute-Country Day School Tournament.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL, for the second time this season, is on a seven-game winning streak that is sandwiched around their only loss through 15 games, to Illinois Class 2A State Champion Chicago Orr Academy. Moreover, like the first streak of seven game wins, the Hawks won a tournament but winning the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament is nothing new. It is the second time in three years the Hawks won that tournament and the sixth time overall since 2003 the Hawks won a holiday tournament at SLCC-Meramec.
Prior to the start of the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament the Hawks won a pair of games in Waynesville, 59-55 over Poplar Bluff and 61-44 over Columbia-Father Tolton Catholic. At the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament Hazelwood Central, seeded second, defeated St. Charles West 64-43, Ritenour 65-57. Jennings 65-37 and top seeded St. Mary’s 67-61. The Hawks begin 2018 with a 69-67 win over CBC at Hazelwood East due to reported power and water problems due to sub-freezing temperatures at Hazelwood Central.
At the Waynesville Route 66 Shootout, senior Shaun Williams scored 18 points while senior Maurice Hayes added 13 against Poplar Bluff while against Tolton senior Cameron Williams scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Against CBC Hazelwood Central led 37-22 at halftime and the Hawks had to withstand a 45-32 second half rally by the Cadets as Shaun Williams, 18 points, and Cameron Williams, 14 points, were two of four Hawks scoring in double figures.
Four Hawks scored in the Coaches versus Cancer win over St. Charles West with Shaun Williams leading the way with 14 points while Cameron Williams and senior Xavier Ball each pulled down 10 rebounds. Four more scored in double figures against former Suburban North Conference rival Ritenour Shaun Williams scored 18 while Ball added 14 to go along with 10 rebounds.
Hazelwood Central dealt Jennings their second loss in 12 games prior to Jan. 9 as three Hawks scored in double figures including Shaun Williams with 20 points. The Hawks knocked St. Mary’s out of the ranks of the unbeaten as four players scored in double figures with Ball scoring a tournament high 24 points while Shaun Williams, scoring 14 or more points in Coaches versus Cancer, added 16.
Hazelwood Central takes their 14-1 record to Vashon on Martin Luther King Day, January 15, with a 2 p.m. game against Jefferson City Helias Catholic. The Hawks resume Suburban XII Conference North Division play (1-0) at home Jan. 17, 5:30 against McCluer.
TRINITY CATHOLIC was 10-2, 3-0 in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division, and on a seven game winning streak prior to the Jan. 8 non conference game at 1-8 McCluer South-Berkeley. Trinity has AAA Small wins over O’Fallon Christian (62-42), Bishop DuBourg (77-31) and Cardinal Ritter. In non-conference, non-tournament games the Titans defeated McCluer North 77-72 and lost 65-57 to St. Louis University High, which is Trinity’s last prior to the seven-game winning streak.
Winning the MICDS Tournament was the first for the Titans as they defeated Clyde C. Miller Career Academy 76-51, Francis Howell 71-48, Lake St. Louis-based Liberty 62-53 and Duchesne 60-39. Leading the way for Trinity at MICDS include junior Jason Thames, 55 points; junior DaJuan Young, 13 rebounds, sophomore Rashad Weekly, 12 assists and six steals, and sophomore Ryan Kalkbrenner, seven blocks.
After hosting Pattonville Jan 10 the Titans resume AAA Small play Jan 17, 7:15 at Lutheran St. Charles County.
