North County Christian Sweeps TRCAA Basketball Tournaments

North County Christian School, taking advantage of playing at home, won both boys and girls high school Twin Rivers Christian Activities Association Basketball Tournaments, Feb.     7, 10.

North County Christian Boys wrapped up the tournament title Feb. 10 with a 62-37 win over Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis. CAGSL (14-5 prior to Feb. 14) had defeated NCCS twice (60-59 at NCCS on Jan. 13 and 70-52 on Feb. 6 at CAGSL). So the third time NCCS (15-6) took charge by scoring the first eight points but CAGSL, who trailed 14-7 after one quarter, rallied in the second to cut the deficit to 24-21 at halftime. The second half of the battle of Crusaders went to NCCS as they outscored CAGSL, 38-16.

“They came out and really pushed themselves,” said NCCS Head Coach Darrell Alexander. “I’m really proud of them.”

NCCS and CAGSL were both 4-2 in TRCAA games but CAGSL won the regular season title on head-to-head tiebreaker

NCCS girls (15-5, 6-0 TRCAA) won the conference tournament title game Feb. 10 over Tower Grove Christian.  The Crusaders scored only three points in the first quarter and trailed the Tigers until the final three minutes of the third quarter when the Crusaders took an 18-16 lead and out scored the Tigers 14-7 the rest of the way.

NCCS girls had a hard year dealing with injures so coach Rebekah Cline said she had to teach kids quickly. Nonetheless “I feel like we’re really successful,” Cline said.

On Feb. 7 NCCS teams won over Collinsville Christian Academy in the TRCAA Tournament. NCCS Boys won 45-38 while NCCS Girls won 46-18.

NCCS, CAGSL and Tower Grove Christian Basketball teams be in the Missouri Christian    State Athletic Association  Tournament, Feb. 16-18 in Joplin.

Girls Swimming: Pattonville Wins Suburban North Tournament

Pattonvillle High School won their fourth consecutive Suburban North Conference Tournament, their 14th overall, Feb. 7-9 at the Bridgeton Community Center. Pattonville, who won seven out of 12 events including all three relays (200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay), scored 392 points, Hazelwood West was a distant second with 283.5 followed by tourney host McCluer North (193.5), Hazelwood Central (139), Ritenour (114), McCluer (87) and Hazelwood East (44).

Pattonville was led by Elise Amo, who won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, Jennifer Baker, who won the 50-yard freestyle and Laura Fulton, who won the one-meter diving. Katharina Schankin, McCluer North, won the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle; Annie Fitzgerald, Hazelwood West, won the 100-yard backstroke; Megan Hei, Hazelwood Central, won the 100-yard backstroke; and Lexie Smith, Ritenour, won the 100-yard butterfly.

The State Championships are Feb. 17-18 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
