Restaurant, Chickens and a Duck On the Florissant Council Agenda

By Carol Arnett

The Florissant City Council held a public hearing for a restaurant at 12675 New Halls Ferry, last week.   Old Tymers Carry-out Kitchen, would be strictly carry-out, said Steven Sloan, the owner. It would be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and stay open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Councilman Joe Eagan said he visited the strip mall where the restaurant would be located and was not pleased.

“I was appalled at the state of the property,” Eagan said. “There was trash all over the property. The side of the building was littered with drinking cups and beer cans.”

Sloan replied that although he owns another business in the center, he does not own the center, and he also had problems with the trash.

Councilwoman Karen McKay said she sympathized with Sloan about the trash, saying that she knows that trash can blow and how hard it can be to keep it away from a business.

Councilman Mark Schmidt said that he had no problems with the proposed business.

No one spoke in opposition to the restaurant and the council held a first reading on a bill that would allow it.

In other action, the council:
• Approved a request by Iwana Rayburn to keep chickens at her home on Hammes Drive.

•  Approved a request by Jamie Hoefer and Keith Melvin to keep a Muxcovy Duck at their home on Norine Court. Eagan, who represents the ward where the duck would be kept, said that he had visited the duck, and said he had no problem approving the request.
