New Site For MSHSAA Girls Volleyball

As It Heads To Cape Girardeau in Nov.

Girls Volleyball will be heading to a Southeast Missouri site according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association, which will be a help to St. Louis area teams and their fans.

Girls Volleyball teams and their fans will not have to make a three- to four-hour trip to Western Missouri to see their teams, particularly Incarnate Word Academy, in the MSHSAA State Championship Tournament. Starting Nov. 4-5, 2011 through November 2014 the MSHSAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament will be held at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau, on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. This will be the first MSHSAA state championship tourney in Cape Girardeau, which is between two and three hours from the Florissant Valley area.

Since 1987 the Girls Volleyball State championships have been held in Western Missouri, the last three years at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. Prior to that the MSHSAA Volleyball Championships have been held in Warrensburg at the now University of Central Missouri Multipurpose Building for 20 years and was at Hickman Mills High in 1987. The last time it was held in St. Louis was 1986 at Parkway South High School.

Meanwhile BASEBALL will be moving to O’Fallon, Mo., in 2013, not 2012 as mentioned in the most recent article two weeks ago. The State Baseball Championships will remain at Springfield’s Meador Park May 30-June 2, 2012 and Meador Park has been the site since 2007. Then it will move to T.R. Hughes Ballpark for the 2013 State championships, May 29-June 1, 2013, and T.R. Hughes Ballpark, home to the defending 2010 Frontier League Champion River City Rascals, will host the MSHSAA Baseball Championships through May-June 2016.

Prior to 2007 the MSHSAA Baseball Championships have been held at Simmons Field/Taylor Stadium in Columbia, on the University of Missouri campus from 1978 to 2006. It was moved to Springfield in 2007 when Missouri hosted the 2007 NCAA Baseball Regionals. The last time it was held in the St. Louis area was 1977 when Heine Meine Field, Lemay hosted the Class AA State Semifinals, Finals won by Truman.

GIRLS SOFTBALL, which moved from St. Joseph to Springfield’s Killian park in October, 2010, will remain in Springfield through October, 2015 and will be played at Killian Park, Oct. 21-22. It will be the same weekend the Girls Tennis State championships will take place Oct. 20-22 at Cooper Tennis Complex, also in Springfield.

Before moving to Springfield the State Softball Championships spent two years in St. Joseph (2008-2009) at Heritage Park. Prior to that Softball was held at Rainbow Softball Complex, first sharing it with a St. Louis site in 1983-1995 then became the exclusive state site in 1996-2007. The most recent site in St. Louis was the Fountain Lake Complex in 1994 — when Pattonville defeated Hazelwood Central, 1-0, in a Class 4A, 15-inning all Suburban North final — and 1995, won by Parkway South.

PARKWAY TOURNAMENT OPENS SOFTBALL SEASON AUG. 22-25-The 2011 Prep Girls Softball season begins Aug 22 and the Parkway Tournament is the traditional season-opener that usually takes place at Manchester and Ballwin Athletic Association parks. Hazelwood West, Incarnate Word Academy, McCluer North, Pattonville and Ritenour will take part in the four day tournament.
