McCluer North Girls Basketball Starts Season 11-7, Wins EPR Classic

After starting the 2016-17 season with five losses in the first seven games McCluer North, defending two-time Suburban XII Conference North Division Champions, improved their season-starting record to 11-7 including a Jan. 16 midday 47-35 home win against Cardinal Ritter.

Five of their first seven losses were to

Illinois high schools including two to Bethalto-Civic Memorial, the last two losses prior to Jan.16. McCluer North won the EPR Classic at Parkway West Jan. 3-6 defeating Troy, Mo., Buchanan 47-34, Parkway Central 41-35 and Fort Zumwalt South 44-43 in overtime. In the EPR Classic Kortni Collins averaged 13.3 points per tournament game with 12 assists, Yhmani Jones has 12 rebounds Anasha Hurst has 13 steals and Eriyanna Simmons blocked eight shots.

Overall Hurst averaged 10.8 points per

game with 42 steals, Collins has 51 assists, Simmons pulled down 97 rebounds and blocked 16 shots and Dominique Oldham has made 62.9 percent of her shots, all from three-point range. McCluer North opened Suburban XII North play Jan. 12 with a 40-21 win at Hazelwood East and will play at Riverview Gardens Thursday, Jan. 19, at 5:30.

   HAZELWOOD WEST   has played half of the games McCluer North played and took a 6-3 overall record to Pattonville on Jan.17. Hazelwood West took third place Dec. 12-16 in the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament, won the consolation title at the 40th Duchesne Invitational. Hazelwood West opened Suburban XII North play Jan. 12 with a 63-28 home win over Riverview Gardens.

Overall, prior to Jan. 17, senior   Lakeita Chappel averaged 19.3 points per game with 25 steals, junior Mallory Meeks made 77.8 percent of her free throws and has 25 assists and Freshman Abigayle Patterson has pulled down 71 rebounds while blocking 31 shots. In the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament Chappel averaged 20.7 points per game, shot 55.9 percent from inside the three-point arc and 75 percent from the free-throw line, Patterson has 24 rebounds and 12 shot blocks and Meeks had seven assists. In the Duchesne Invitational Chappel scored 18.7 points per game and pulled down 21 rebounds, Meeks has 12 assists and Patterson blocked 13 shots.

Hazelwood West visits McCluer Thursday in a 5:30 Suburban XII North game and hosts Jennings Friday, Jan. 20; at 7 p.m. Hazelwood West hosts McCluer North Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

NORTH TECHNICAL is 9-4 and took the consolation title in the St. Dominic Christmas Tournament to end 2016. North Tech returns home Thursday for a 5:30 game against the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, a Magnet School among the St. Louis Public Schools, visits Cardinal Ritter Feb. 23 at 6:45 and begins the Fifth Eldon Tournament, Jan. 26, 7:30 against the Fox Junior Varsity.

Senior Janelle Randle averaged 15

points and 11.2 rebounds per game and made 53.2 percent of her free throws while making 88 steals. Junior Jessica Meyers scored 10.3 points per game while making 47 assists. Senior Chrishey Wilkes averages 11.3 rebounds per game while blocking 37 shots. In the St. Dominic Tournament Randle averaged 16 points per game with 15 steals, Meyers has 13 assists, Wilkes had 14.3 rebounds per game and 16 blocked shots and senior Tegan Stith made 55 percent of three-point shots and 63.6 percent of free throws

ACADEMY did not win the Nike Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. IWA lost 60-50 Dec. 22 to tournament host Mesquite, Ariz.
