Council Votes 5-4 To Purchase Fatima Convent

BY CAROL ARNETT

After several months of arguing, the Florissant council voted 5-4 in favor of appropriating money to purchase the former Our Lady of Fatima convent at 4450 Washington Street.

Councilwoman Karen McKay summarized the process the council has gone through with the convent building. She said the Johnny Londoff purchased the property from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Londoff uses the former athletic fields to park overflow cars.

Lindenwood University purchased the school building. Londoff offered to sell the convent to the city for $1,000.

McKay said that several council members had toured the building and it would take several thousand dollars to fix it up to code. “We are not in the real estate business,” McKay said.

Councilman Keith English said he could not vote for the purchase because of the extensive repairs the building needed.

Councilman Tom Schneider said that the city was in a similar position with a piece of property behind the International House of Pancakes. The city acquired the property, when the restaurant developer didn’t want it, and later sold it at a profit.

———-In other matters, the council:
•Continued a bill that would alter the city code to require a majority vote to have communications read in their entirety. A substitute bill was offered that would require two council members to read the communication instead of a majority. Several letters opposing the bill were received by the council.

•Passed a bill that allows the expansion of Gettemeiers, at 1740 Thunderbird.

The council also from Mayor Robert Lowery that on June 9, the city was sponsoring a bulky trash day. Trash can be brought to the Eagan Center or St. Ferdinand Park.
