Hazelwood East Girls Track Once Again Are Class Four Runner Ups

Hazelwood East High School Girls Track & Field had hopes to improve from last year’s second-place finish, sharing 45 points with Eureka, 13 behind repeat champion Jefferson City, who had 58.

On May 25-26 Hazelwood East scored 54 points in the Class Four State Meet at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium, Jefferson City. However Jefferson City High, next to Reed Stadium, scored 58.5 points in winning their third straight state title, their fourth in the last five years and their sixth overall. It was East’s second runner up finish and the Spartans took home their ninth state girls trophy since 1982.

It was East’s second runner up finish in 2007 as the Spartans lost to Liberty last March in the Class Five Girls Basketball championship game.

East, who was the only Suburban North Conference team to take home a state trophy, got a one-two finish in the 300-Meter Hurdles as Tiera Jones won in a 43.99-second effort while Alana Gray was second in 44.82 seconds. Gray was second in the 100-Meter Hurdles and third in the Long Jump while Jantelle McNeil was third in the 100-Meter Hurdles and fourth in the 300-Meter Hurdles. East’s 4×400-Meter Hurdles team finished second.

McCluer North is the only other Suburban North Conference team to finish in the top 10, sharing seventh place with Lee’s Summit North (22 points). Two relay teams led McCluer North as the 4×100 finished second while the 4×200 finished third. Hazelwood Central finished 14th but had a state champion in Jelani Kelly who won the Discus with a 134’6″ throw

McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY DOMINATES CLASS THREE — McCluer South-Berkeley High School won the Class Three Championship, May 25-26 in Jefferson City with a 76-point finish, 26 ahead of runner up Festus High. It was the Bulldogs’ seventh state title but the first as McCluer South Berkeley. Prior to the opening of McCluer
South-Berkeley the old Berkeley High had 21 state titles overall in all sports so MSBs first state title is the 22nd overall for the Bulldogs.

Junior Alishea Usery is a triple three-peat winner as she won her third straight state titles in the 100-, 200- and 400-Meter Dashes and broke state meet records she set two years ago. The state winning 4×400-Meter relay team’s 3:45.78 was better than their 3:51.4 state mark set last year. Two other relay teams, the 4×800 and 4×200 also won state titles but the 4×800, in a 9:26.42 effort, broke a 1993 effort of 9:30.46 set by The Principia.

BOYS TRACK – SIXTH WAS BEST FOR EAST, LHSN — No state trophies for North County high schools in Boys Track & Field as Lee’s Summit won Class Four and Potosi won Class Three May 25-26 in Jefferson City. Hazelwood East took sixth place in Class Four while Lutheran North shared sixth place in Class Three with Jennings and Kansas City Central. Among the other top-10 finishers Hazelwood Central took eighth and McCluer North shared ninth with Blue Springs in Class Four while McCluer South-Berkeley took ninth in Class Three.

Hazelwood East had three third-place finishes, junior DeMarco Paine in the 200-Meter Dash and Long Jump as well as the 4×100-Meter Relay team. Hazelwood Central got a state championship in the 4×200-Meter relay team, whose 1:25.62 mark broke last year’s 1:26.11 mark set by St. Louis University High, while junior Garren Hendricks took second in the 100-Meter Dash. McCluer North’s 4×100-Meter Relay team won state as their 41.55-second mark broke the 1992 record of 41.82 seconds set by Class 4A State Champion McCluer while the 4×200 Relay’s second -place mark of 1:25.76 was better than SLUHs winning mark set last year.

Lutheran North was led by junior Tyler Shaw, who won the 110-Meter Hurdles and took second in the 300-Meter Hurdles. McCluer South-Berkeley had a winner in the Boys 4×200-Meter Relay team.
