BY JIM WIENERS

Enjoying their first-ever 5-0 start in football Hazelwood West, who played the last four games at home, will be playing the next four weeks on the road including the next two games, both non conference games on Friday nights.

West, 4-0 in the Suburban North Conference, will be heading to Cottleville, Mo., Friday for a 7 p.m. game against Francis Howell Central. One week later, Oct. 10, the Wildcats will be playing at 7 p.m. against DeSmet at St. Louis University High (DeSmet is renovating their own field). West will return to Suburban North play when MSHSAA districts begin, Oct. 18, 12 noon at Riverview Gardens and Oct. 25, 2 p.m. at McCluer North.

Francis Howell Central is 0-5 but could be a “trap game” but West head coach Keith Herring said the Wildcats will not be falling into a trap because “we’re going to work our butts off.” Last Saturday against McCluer Keith Herring, who Herring said look tough, scored a pair of second half touchdowns in a 28-14 Wildcat homecoming win.
“I can not say enough about the kids,” Herring said about the Wildcats’ 5-0 start.

Meanwhile McCluer (3-1 SNC, 4-1 overall) returns home Saturday to play at 1 p.m. against Hazelwood Central. The Comets got two touchdowns and a two-point conversion run from Lynex Owens against West. Hazelwood Central (1-1, 4-1) rolled to a 35-7 win last Friday at Jackson as Kerry Gibson passed for two touchdowns and ran for another.

IN OTHER SUBURBAN NORTH GAMES, this Saturday at 1 p.m. McCluer North (1-2, 2-3) hosts Ritenour (2-3, 2-3) while Hazelwood East (2-1, 4-1) hosts Riverview Gardens (0-3, 2-3). Last Saturday Hazelwood East got a five-yard touchdown from DeJuan Owens in a 28-21 overtime win over McCluer North, who got a touchdown pass and a touchdown run from Ralph Watson. Also last Saturday Ritenour got two touchdown passes from Mikel Neil in a 23-20 homecoming win over Riverview Gardens, who had two touchdown passes from Joe Williams.

TRINITY CATHOLIC closes Archdiocesan Athletic Association play Friday at Bishop DuBourg in a 7 p.m. game. Trinity (2-3 AAA, 2-3) got six touchdowns from junior Marquise Hill, on 379 all purpose yards last Friday in a 54-34 homecoming win over St. Dominic. With only three seniors, one playing, Trinity coach Leon Hite said after last Friday’s win; “We’re probably the youngest team in state.”

ELSEWHERE, Saturday at 1 p.m., Lutheran North (2-3) plays at The Principia (2-3) while McCluer South-Berkeley (4-1) hosts Ladue (1-4). Last week Lutheran North routed visiting and winless Lutheran South, 52-0 while McCluer South-Berkeley lost their first game of the season, 15-14 at Affton.
