CBC Takes Second Place, DeSmet 3rd In Troy-Buchanan Baseball Tourney

CBC (Christian Brothers College) High School and DeSmet Jesuit High School started their baseball seasons by competing in the 2011-opening tournament hosted by Troy-Buchanan High School.

CBC, 2010 Class Four State Champions, took second place in the Troy-Buchanan Tournament while DeSmet took third place. The tournament was played March 19-23

CBC started their tournament run March 19 with a 10-2 win over Hillsboro and a 6-1 win over Fort Zumwalt North in games played at Fort Zumwalt West.

On March 22 at Wentzville-Timberland CBC defeated DeSmet in the semifinals, 10-6. On March 23 at Troy Buchanan CBC lost the championship game to Francis Howell.

DeSmet, prior to the semifinal loss to CBC, opened at Timberland March 19 with a 6-2 win over St. Charles West then traveled to O’Fallon, Mo., that day for a 9-1 win at Fort Zumwalt West. After losing to CBC DeSmet rebounded March 23 for a 7-0 win over Fort Zumwalt East in the third-place game at Troy-Buchanan.

CBC-In the win over Hillsboro the Cadets out hit the Hawks 14-4, Derek Cornell stole three bases, Mike Ehrhard drove in three runs and Danny Chastain scored three times. CBC pitching struck out eight Hillsboro batters. Against Fort Zumwalt North in the quarterfinals the Cadets out hit the Panthers, 12-5, Ehrhard, who hit a home run, and David Schmidt combined for 12 strikeouts and Chastain drove in two runs.

In the semifinals CBC out hits DeSmet, 13-6, Schmidt drove in three runs and scored two more as he hit a double and a triple. Chastain, Parker Stewart and Mike Venturella each scored twice while Ehrhard drove in three more. In the championship game Francis Howell, who had nine hits, limited CBC to five hits as the Cadets only scored their three runs in the fifth inning with Chastain driving in two.

Ehrhard, Cornell, Chastain and Joe Schrimpf each hit two doubles in the tournament, Ehrhard drove in seven runs Chastain, who scored six runs, drove in six while Cornell and Venturella each scored five runs. Chastain and Cornell each stole four bases while Venturella and Bobby Lang each stole two. Schmidt struck out eight opposition batters.

DeSMET-In the tournament opener against St. Charles West Kyle Bouman helped the Spartans win on the mound by striking out 10 Warriors and not allowed a hit despite giving up two runs. Bouman also had a double and drove in two runs while Alex Everett had two doubles and drove in two runs.

In the quarterfinal win at Fort Zumwalt West Bouman tripled and hit a solo home run in scoring twice, Zak Larkin and Nick Rumping each drove in two runs while Killian Knowles scored two times. Brandon Miller pitched a complete-game three-hitter while striking out six Jaguar batters. DeSmet had 10 hits.

DeSmet and CBC will play each other two more times, April 19 at DeSmet and May 11 at Missouri Baptist University, which is next to CBC. DeSmet and CBC are in Class Four, District Seven which means possibly playing at lest one more time.

In the third place win over Fort Zumwalt East DeSmet, who scored two runs in the second inning, sealed the victory by three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Bouman shut out the Lions on six hits, five singles and a double, while striking out five. Chris Arends hit a three-run homer in the sixth while Zack Caldwell had a two-run homer.

Everett was hitting .625 in the tournament, five hits in eight at bats, Everett and Larkin doubled twice, Bouman and Miller each had a 1.00 earned run average and each pitched a compete game. Bouman won two games and struck out 15 batters while Miller struck out six.

DeSMET, SLUH HOST JESUIT CLASSIC-DeSmet and St. Louis University High will play host to the Jesuit Baseball Classic April 1-2. Competing in the Jesuit Classic are Loyola Academy (Chicago-Wilmette), Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb.) and Rockhurst (Kansas Cit y).

DeSmet will play host to Loyola Academy, April 1 at 4:30, while on April 2 the Spartans play Rockhurst at 10:45 a.m. and Creighton Prep at 2p.m. SLUH will play Creighton Prep April 1 at 7 p.m. while on April 2 the Junior Billikens play Loyola Academy at  10 a.m. and Rockhurst at 1 p.m.
