Florissant Valley Soccer Field to be Named in Honor of Pete Sorber
The St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees recently approved a resolution to name the soccer field at its Florissant Valley campus after retired coach Pete Sorber, who created the most dominant program in National Junior College Athletic Association history.
The playing surface will be designated as Pete Sorber Field for a period of five years. Friends of Sorber, as well as former Florissant Valley soccer players, have pledged to raise $10,000 per year for five years for the St. Louis Community College Foundation to name the soccer field in Sorber’s honor.
In 30 seasons as head coach at Florissant Valley, Sorber’s teams compiled a 415-85-22 record. They captured 10 NJCAA championships, finished second twice and won 18 Region XVI titles. Sorber coached 72 players who earned NJCAA All-America honors. Many of those players went on to four-year institutions and later played professionally in the North American Soccer League, the Major Indoor Soccer League or the National Professional Soccer League.
Sorber was named NJCAA Coach of the Year five times. He is a member of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame, as well as the halls of fame for the NJCAA and Region XVI. He retired from STLCC in 1997.
The STLCC men’s soccer team has played its home games on this field since the athletics program moved to a districtwide format in 2011. A dedication ceremony will take place in the future.
