Hazelwood Fire Department Chief is Proud of New Rating

The Insurance Service Office awarded the Hazelwood Fire Department a Class Three ISO rating. The ISO evaluates and rates departments and districts provided in communities. The classification system grades a community’s fire protection on a scale of one-ten. Many insurance companies use the ISO’s evaluations when setting the premiums they charge for in communities.

“This is a major accomplishment for the Department and the community,” said Chief Jim Matthies. Only three percent of all the departments or districts in the State of Missouri have been granted a class three or better and only five percent of the 46,195 departments in the country have received a class three or better.

ISO is a private, independent organization which comes into the community for several days and investigates all facets of the local fire department such as water supplies, fire trucks, personnel, training, dispatching and more. Based on the findings, the fire department is rated on a scale of one-ten, one being the best. The organization is supported by its insurance company subscribers.

Chief Matthies said he is extremely proud of his department for achieving this recognition. He said, “We could not have accomplished this for the community without the strong efforts of all the firefighters and staff and the support of the city council and city manager.”
