St. Louis Community College has announced plans to open the new STLCC Corporate Center. The building will provide services to the St. Louis area’s business and professional community. The center, formerly known as the Marcasco Building, is located at 3221 McKelvey Road in northwest St. Louis County.
“One of St. Louis Community College’s three strategic directions is to respond more quickly to workforce needs, and this is our response to that strategic direction – to be able to turn on a dime to meet those training needs that businesses have,” said Chancellor Zelema Harris. “In 2005, college leaders decided we needed a separate facility to meet the workforce demands and training needs in that particular area. We’ve been working for years with businesses, with labor, but we’ve never really been in the white collar market. This facility will give us a chance to provide those knowledge workers the kind of training they need.”
The college plans a phased move-in, beginning in spring 2011. Initial plans call for classrooms, a multi-function space, breakout rooms, a testing center, computer labs, reception area and offices.
“This is a high-traffic corridor in close proximity to labor pools in north and west St. Louis County, as well as St. Charles County,” said Rod Nunn, the college’s vice chancellor for workforce and community development. “There are 1,648 businesses, primarily small and non-manufacturing, in the area surrounding the center. They employ nearly 223,200 workers, many of whom live outside the STLCC service area.
The STLCC Corporate Center will:
• Partner with the campuses to develop dynamic, flexible course delivery and customized corporate degree and certificate programs.
• Work with the campuses to create direct pathways to STLCC academic programs.
• Offer new programs aimed at small businesses and entrepreneurship.
• Include a small business incubator to support firms employing middle-skill graduates from STLCC career and technical programs.
• House the college’s Workforce and Community Development division, which has provided customized training and other services to the St. Louis region and state for nearly 30 years.
