Florissant Patrol Officer Cited For Heroism
State Rep. Margo McNeil (right) presented a resolution to Meghan Murbarger (left) of Florissant recognizing her Award of Valor at a ceremony at the in St. Charles on August 31.
While driving home from work, Meghan Murbarger of Florissant witnessed a motor vehicle accident in which a minivan crashed into the back of a parked truck at Charbonaire and Sunridge, pushing both vehicles several feet.
Without regard for her own safety, Parole Officer Murbarger ran to the smoking vehicle to check on the occupants. She briefly talked with the female driver who had apparently suffered a medical condition, causing the accident. The driver was somewhat combative and confused and had not realized she had been in an accident.
PO Murbarger then opened the back of the minivan and found seven young children who had not been properly restrained, some severely injured. Murbarger climbed into the still smoking van and assessed the children’s injuries while calling 911 and advising of the situation. When she learned they weren’t in any fire danger, she decided to leave the children in the van and sat with them until medical personnel arrived. All eight occupants of the van were transported to the hospital
PO Murbarger. She was able to assess a dangerous situation, notify the proper authorities and tend to the children in the van, calming them down, and helping paramedics. “Meghan Murbarger acted in a heroic and courageous manner” said McNeil at the ceremony,
