Tooth Wizard prepares to dump “mouth wash” on the heads of McNair Elementary kindergartners Damian Garcia and Madison Hamberg as they portray teeth during Delta Dental of Missouri’s “Teeth on the Go” program. At left is PANDA, Tooth Wizard’s friend and helper. The pair’s enemy, Plaqueman, also plays a part in the show.
Displaying high energy, some catchy expressions and a dash of slapstick humor, the Bazoink Entertainment and Delta Dental of Missouri “Teeth on the Go” program paid a visit to McNair Elementary School recently.
The program, geared for kindergarten through third grade, teaches students how to take care of their teeth and gums. To accomplish this, Teeth on the Go relies on a tried-and-true method – hero versus villain.
The good guy is Tooth Wizard and his nemesis is Plaqueman. For every positive move Tooth Wizard makes, Plaqueman makes sure to foil his efforts.
With his purple and silver costume, complete with pointy hat and droopy sleeves, Tooth Wizard opened the show by skittering around the room as he pretended to fear his audience, which roared with laughter at his antics. Once he settled down, he bellowed for his friend and helper, a panda bear, appropriately named Panda.
McNair Elementary Nurse Christian Bertel said “Teeth on the Go did a great job at engaging the children. Even the third graders, the oldest of the bunch, laughed and interacted when prompted by Tooth Wizard.”
Tooth Wizard displays a positive demeanor, uses expressions such as, “OOooOOoo,” and “COOooOOlll,” plus many hand flourishes while he talks to the boys and girls. Unveiling a large object on one side of the room, Tooth Wizard and Panda displayed a model set of teeth and gums, which they referred to as the healthy mouth. While the children cheered, Plaqueman made his entrance, stage left.
Wearing a brown and mustard-colored costume, complete with brown cap, moccasin-like shoes and detachable plaque pieces, Plaqueman resembled a cross between Davy Crockett and a large bumblebee. Plaqueman has his own vocabulary and attitude.
“Here a plaque, there a plaque, everywhere a plaque, plaque” is one of his signature phrases, along with, “Booga! Booga!” He scurried to the model mouth, quickly dislodging parts of his suit and left the pieces on the model teeth.
Tooth Wizard called for three volunteers to help him combat Plaqueman’s bad habits and to brush off the plaque stains. After Plaqueman yanked out the model mouth’s tongue, he also festooned it with plaque. The wizard engaged another student helper to restore dental order. and using mouth wash.
