During its annual May Day Weekend, the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center will recognize Karlton Thornton, director on the HSD Board of Education, as a 2010 Child Advocate honoree.
On Friday, May 14, Thornton will be honored among a group of 16 child advocates at the Annie Malone Soiree Dinner and Silent Auction, which will be held at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis. This event honors individuals in the community who have helped improve the quality of life for children and families.
Thornton was appointed to the HSD Board of Education in December 2009 to fill an unexpired term. He was elected to the board in April 2010.
He has been active in the District through his participation in PTA and Hazelwood 1st. He is also on the Board of Directors for the DaySpring Centre for Arts and Education; and is a deacon and trustee for the First Missionary Baptist Church of Kinloch, which is located in Black Jack. Thornton is a meter supervisor for AmerenUE. He is also a technical advisor and sound designer for the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre.
Thornton has lived in the District for more than 10 years and he has one grown daughter. He and his wife, Karen (a graduate of Hazelwood Central High School), have two children – a 13-year-old daughter who attends Hazelwood Northwest Middle School, and a 4-year-old daughter who will begin kindergarten at Lusher Elementary School next fall.
Thornton has a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast and Communications Technology from the University of Central Missouri.
Since 1888, the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center has been an anchor in the Ville community, dedicated to improving the quality of life for abused, neglected and abandoned children and at-risk families. To date, May Day activities serve as the largest of fundraising events held by the agency each year. To learn more, visit www.anniemalone.com
