Piper Named Interim Supt. For Hazelwood School District

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education has named Mary Piper as interim superintendent to lead the district after Supt. Chris L. Wright was selected as the commissioner of education for the state of Missouri.

Currently, Piper is the associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She joined the district 10 years ago, first serving as principal of Lawson Elementary School, and then becoming the assistant superintendent for curriculum and professional development.

“I have the world’s best mentor in Chris Wright. I am excited about carrying forth the vision she’s set for the District,” said Piper. “The Hazelwood team is the best I’ve ever worked with. They are outstanding.”

Piper has been actively involved in helping establish partnerships that are beneficial to students, teachers, staff and administrators in HSD. They include the district’s involvement with the University of Missouri Partnership for Educational Renewal, and relationships with higher education institutions such as St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Maryville University and Washington University in St. Louis. She has worked to set a clear vision for professional development and improve standards-based teaching throughout the District.

Piper has been in education since 1977. She worked for the Special School District of St. Louis County after graduating from college. For 20 years, she taught in special education, reading, English as a Second Language and served as a program coordinator in the Francis Howell School District.

She earned a bachelor of arts in education from Fontbonne College; she has a master’s degree in education and special education and a doctoral degree in education administration, both from Saint Louis University. She and her husband, Bob, have two daughters.

Piper will begin her new position on Aug. 1.
