Best Weekend For Cards Fans Since Oct.

BY RANDY GARDNER

What a great weekend it was as the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals held its annual Winter Warm up at the Millennium hotel in downtown St. Louis. There were fans from all over the Midwest and Mid-South, some as far away as other countries.

What a unique event this is for the fans as they are encouraged to bring items to be autographed. All of the money raised goes to the Cardinals CARE program. The event was capped off on Monday night with an event that is one of only three of them left in the country, the other two being in Boston and New York. This being the Baseball Writers dinner.

This was the first event that I have been to in many years and it was great. The writers in front of a crowd of over 1700 people honored the Cardinals organization and its players for their efforts in this past season. What made this so special is that we were coming off of a World Series Championship season. Several of the players were there to accept their awards including Davis Eckstein, who I think stole the evening with his presence along with several other of the Redbirds.

Manager Tony LARussa was on hand to talk and accepted awards for Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols. Commissioner Bud Selig was also on hand for the event as everyone spoke of how great of a city this is for baseball. The event also honored our great world serried team of the past, the 1982 Redbirds. It was great to see guys like Tom Herr, Lou Brock and Keith Hernandez on hand to talk about the team that won the Championship.

The other big news announced that night was that the 2009 Major League All Star Game will be held here in St. Louis. This is great or the city but for the fans, I wonder how many will actually get to go because all of the tickets will be also bought by teams and fans from around the country. It should be fun though either way, even if we have to sit and watch it on our home TV. Put it on your calendar for 2009.

BLUES ARE BRINGING BACT FANS

How about those St. Louis Blues, as I mentioned last week, this team is sliding up the charts at a great pace and still might have a chance to get into the playoffs. I would love to see that for all of the Blues bashers out there. It seems like the crowds are getting bigger and better. They really seem to be getting into the games more. This is what the franchise needs right now, some support.

Finally, as I sit and reflect on sports and put it into perspective, nothing can compare to the finding of the two missing children. Count your blessings everyday and hug your children and make sure that you never take a day for granted with them. Congratulations to the families and for all of the hard work from everyone involved in finding them.
