Ferguson-Florissant Honors Students, Organizations at Feb. Board Meeting

The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education honored accomplishments of students and donations of organizations at its monthly board meeting on Feb. 10. Honorees’ received certificates of appreciation and pats-on-the back from board members.

Supt. Jeff Spiegel said he believes the recognition are a good reminder to the board and the district as a whole about the reason they exist – to serve students. Those honored:

McCluer Student Named KMOX/SEMO Student of Achievement. The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education applauds Chase Dzierwa, a junior at McCluer High School, on being named a KMOX/Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) Student of Achievement. Each year KMOX Radio, Southeast Missouri State University and the Suburban Journals present the award to 30 students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, the arts, community service and leadership. It includes a four-year renewable scholarship to SEMO valued at $12,000 if he maintains a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

McCluer Theatre Troupe Continues Legacy of Excellence. The board commends McCluer (MC) High School’s Thespian Troupe 787 on being named an honor troupe for the fifth year in a row at the Missouri State Thespian Convention. Because of its challenging requirements, only two percent of the state’s troupes receive this prestigious honor. MC’s troupe includes sophomore Jade Hillery; juniors Temeeka Glass, Alex Lowery, Samantha Spegal and Steven Wolff; and seniors Sydney Daniels, Jasmine Dorris, Stephen Garrett, Ashley Hurd, Troy Jones, Khaila Pate, Kirsten Reedy, Juancarlos Reyes, Taelon Smith, Matt Stonecipher, Arizona Thomas and Roger Woods.

Their next performance, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the theatre, includes scenes from playwright August Wilson’s 20th Century Cycle plays that chronicle the African-American experience in the United States

FFSD Students Win NCCU Oratory Contest, Share King’s Dream. The board  recognized  Andre Parker, a sixth-grader at Halls Ferry Elementary School and Larissha Anderson, a senior at McCluer North High School, for being selected to present their speeches on “Continuing the Dream Through Civic and Community Engagement.” Andre was selected as one of three winners in the 6th to 8th grade category. Larissha was selected as the sole winner of the 9-12 grade category.

Wedgwood’s Robo Riders to Present at State Capital. The board congratulatesd Wedgwood Elementary School’s “Robo Riders” for being one of only  16 Missouri FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL)® teams invited to participate in a demonstration competition in the rotunda of the state capital on March 4. The competition’s theme is transportation. Their project’s premise is that students can “transport knowledge” or learn as they themselves are transported by school buses and make better use of their time. Each Robo Rider received a medal for this demonstration at the competition held at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

The students include:  fourth-graders Diamon Campbell and Donyell Nelson; fifth-graders Justin Dolan, Jada Ivy, Brandon Soehgen and Marlon Wallace; and sixth-graders Monica Buckner, Raven Mays, Jessica Moll and Tyler Perkins.

MN Athletes Named to First and Second All-State Football Teams. The board congratulates Tyran Carey, a junior, and Joe Burgess, a senior, for being named to the Missouri Football Coaches’ Association All-State football first team. The board would also like to recognize Alex Beckmann, a senior, on being named to the Missouri Football Coaches’ Association All-State football second team. The young men are students at McCluer North High School.
