City of Hazelwood’s Recycling Program Going Strong

Veolia Environmental Services reports that it has collected 120.83 tons of recyclables in December 2009 in Hazelwood, an increase of 32.45 tons over the amount for December 2008.  This figure tops the previous record-breaking total of 96.97 tons in October 2008.

“It’s great to see the strong support we’re getting from residents for our recycling program,” said David Stewart, PE, CPM, Director of Public Works/City Engineer, City of Hazelwood. “In 2008, the City negotiated a contract with Veolia Environmental Services to provide a 65-gallon recycling cart to every one- and two-family residence in our community free of charge.  Most of these carts were delivered last fall.  This has made it easier for people to be more green-friendly and separate recycling items from their regular trash.”

For the first nine months of 2008, recyclable collections averaged 28 tons per month in the City of Hazelwood.  After residents received their recycling carts in October 2008, collections skyrocketed to an average of 90 tons per month for the last quarter.  This produced an increase of approximately 223 percent.

In 2009, the amount of recyclable tonnage collected from Hazelwood has nearly tripled on a monthly basis.  The top producing months are as follows:  December (120.83 tons); October (96.75 tons); November (88.43 tons); May (85.33 tons); and February (82.61 tons).

According to Al Heinermann, Veolia’s Municipal Market Representative, “We normally see an increase in recycling volumes in communities that utilize recycling carts. But Hazelwood’s results are phenomenal, exceeding everyone’s expectations.  It’s one of the largest percentage increases in recycling volumes collected that we’ve seen from any municipality in the St. Louis area.”

“We’re proud of our residents for becoming more environmentally-conscious and supportive of the changes we’ve made to the City’s recycling program,” said Mayor Matthew Robinson, City of Hazelwood.  “Our goal is to get more residents involved in efforts to recycle, reuse and conserve energy in order to make Hazelwood a greener community.”
