Upper-Class Postseason Ready?
By Jim Wieners
Nine weeks of Missouri High School Football are over but 0-3 Trinity Catholic and 3-0 Lutheran North played only one-third of the season thanks to St. Louis County Health Guidelines that did not allow Football games until Oct. 7, even though Lutheran North defied Guidelines and played Oct. 3.
Last year Lutheran North was a Class Two State Champion, their sixth overall and first undefeated. Meanwhile Trinity’s hopes of successfully defending the 2018 State Title ends in the State Semifinals last season as the Titans lost to eventual State Runner-Up Cassville.
This year The Missouri State High School Activities Association replaces the 1.35 multiplier with a success factor for private high schools to go along with the actual enrollment. As a result, Lutheran North moves up from Class Two to Class Three and Trinity Catholic moves up from Class Three to Class Four. Which begs the question: “Are Trinity Catholic and Lutheran North, with oily three games instead of nine, ready for districts?”
Answers could come in the next six weekends beginning Friday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m. when Trinity opens Class Four, District Three at 4-4 St. Charles West, with top-seeded Mary Institute Country Day School (3-0) playing the winner Nov. 6 or 7. Meanwhile Lutheran North is the top seed in Class Three, District Three and will be off until Nov. 6 when the Crusaders play the winner of the Oct. 30 game between 5-4 Orchard Farm and 4-4 Wright City. Lutheran North was off last weekend when the Crusaders could not find a replacement for Edwardsville, Ill., when the Illinois High Scholl Association announced last summer moving Football to next spring. Games are COVID-19 permitting.
Both Trinity and Lutheran North were to play St. Mary’s earlier in the season but County Guidelines forced cancellation of the games. However, Trinity, which was move from division Two to Division One of the Archdiocesan Athletic Association (including St. Mary’s), were able to play the Dragons Oct. 23 as a replacement for Soldan International Studies after the St. Louis Public Schools moved all fall sports to next Spring. Lutheran North was to open Aug. 29 against St. Mary but the Crusaders met the Dragons Oct. 16 replacing Bishop Miege, which is located in the state of Kansas.
Trinity scored 35 points against St. Mary’s Oct. 23, which were 21 more than the combined total of points scored in the first two games. Nevertheless, the visiting Titans lost a heartbreaker to the Dragons 36-35, thanks to a kickoff return for a Dragon touchdown by Junior Kevin Coleman and the extra point by senior Keith Polette with 1:50 left. That came 12 seconds after Trinity’s point after touchdown, the second rushing touchdown by sophomore Christian Cotton, failed following a high snap.
St. Mary’s sealed the win with a Coleman pass interception with 1:37 left and a recovery of a muffed Trinity punt return with two seconds left. Despite the loss, in which Trinity led 22-7 at halftime, Cotton had a hand on all five Titan touchdowns including three scoring passes. Coleman caught two of four St. Mary’s Touchdown passes by junior Caron Spann.
Lutheran North, on the other hand took advantage of four visiting St. Mary’s turnover in a 33-20 Crusader win at LaMothe Memorial Field. Senior Travion Ford and junior Makai Parton return Dragons fumbles for Crusader touchdowns, juniors Brian Brown and Toriano Pride connected on a 60-yard touchdown pass and field goals were made by senior Jacob Fuller (32 yards in the first quarter0 and sophomore Caleb Fuller (27 yards in the fourth quarter)/. Coleman scored two Dragon touchdowns.
On Oct. 16, Trinity lost a 9-7 home heartbreaker to Chaminade thanks to a touchdown by Chaminade junior Cam Epps, a firs-quarter Trinity bad snap safety and two Red Devil blocked Field goal attempts. Trinity also lost a fumbled put return with three minutes left. Cotton had the lone Titan Touchdown.
FALL NOTES — Trinity defeated Lutheran North in two other sports. The Titans avenged a home Boys Soccer 1-0 penalty kicks loss with a 2-1 penalty kicks win Oct. 20 at Lutheran North. Trinity Girls Volleyball won 3-0 Oct 22 at Lutheran North, the second Titan sweep over the Crusaders this season.
District Girls Tournaments, which began Oct. 26, end Thursday (Oct. 29). Incarnate word Academy hosted one of the districts. Volleyball Sectionals are Saturday (Oct. 31). IWA Tennis doubles players Grace Brown and Erin Coleman took sixth place in Class Two Girls State Oct. 16 in Springfield
