Florissant City Council

Narrow Gauge Brewing, LaPatisserie,

Shade Restaurant Get Approval For Changes

         By Carol Arnett

The Florissant City Council had a short meeting with no public hearings scheduled, but they took action on several bills including approving Narrow Gauge Brewing Company to operate a Brewpub and approving changes at two other N. Lindbergh restaurants.

First, the council held a moment of silence for local labor leader Dick Kellet and golf course superintendent Mike Smoot, both of whom died in February. Resident John Engelmeier spoke about Kevin O’Donnell, who also recently died. Funeral services for him were held March 3. Mr. O’Donnell was a frequent speaker at council meetings, and active in city activities.

The council took action on a few businesses that were recently discussed at public hearings.

One will authorize Narrow Gauge Brewing Company to operate a Brewpub at 1545 N. Highway 67. The brewery is moving out of Cugino’s to a building nearby. They will have a tasting room at the new facility.

The council also passed a bill to authorize Marikit Villasis-Corbin, doing business at La Patisserie, to operate a sit-down, carry-out restaurant at 119 Flower Valley Shopping Center. Villasis-Corbin currently has a bakery in the city. The new location will allow her to have more space for her business.

The council passed a bill to authorize an Avis Budget Car Leasing facility at 730 N. Highway 67.

In new business, the council approved a request to transfer a special use permit form Hwy 67 BBQ to Shade Partners, LLC, doing business as Shade Restaurant and bar at 1752-1754 N. New Florissant Road. Chris Alexander, the current owner of Hwy 67 BBQ, has taken on partners and will remain at the restaurant, which will be renamed. Councilman Joe Eagan has some questions for the owners. He said he went by the restaurant recently and there was a mess outside, including cooking tongs and pans. He said he also noticed that the windows have all been blacked out. “I’m concerned,” he said. He also asked if proposed changes will require different equipment. Princeton Dew, one of the new owners, said that the windows had not been blacked out, just tinted.

The council also approved a request for a full liquor by the drink license for the restaurant and held a first reading on the bill approving the project.

In other matters, the council:

  • Approved a request to transfer a special use permit from Dogs N Frys to House of Jollof, LLC, for the operation of sit-down, carry-out restaurant at 503 Paul Avenue. The council also held a first reading on the bill approving the restaurant.
  • Postponed a request for a malt liquor and wine package liquor license for Family Dollar Stores at 750 S. New Florissant Road and 2568 N. Highway 67. Councilman Keith Schildroth said he wanted to ask the petitioner some questions, but the petitioner was not at the meeting.
  • Held a first reading on a bill that would amendment the section of the city code dealing with Dance halls and similar businesses by deleting it and replacing it with a new section.
