Teachers of the Year are Announced

The Hazelwood School District names a Teacher of the Year at each school, after which an overall District Teacher of the Year and two runners-up are selected. They were announced in late January. Joel Crenshaw, sixth grade reading and English language arts teacher at Hazelwood Northwest Middle School, has been named the 2019-2020 Hazelwood School District Teacher of the Year.
Tiffany Fane, instructional coach at Hazelwood East Middle School, was named first runner-up; Ashley Smith, P.E. and driver’s education teacher at Hazelwood Central High School, was named second runner-up. Crenshaw was surprised with the news in his classroom Jan. 23 by Supt. Nettie Collins-Hart.
“I am both honored and humbled by my selection as Teacher of the Year,” Crenshaw said. “My students and I share a mutual desire to be successful in the classroom, and that respect for one another is what builds a climate of hope, culture of achievement, and an environment where students thrive.”
Crenshaw is now in his fifth year teaching in the Hazelwood School District, all of them spent at Northwest Middle School. When he is not teaching, he enjoys farming and officiating college basketball for three different conferences. “Mr. Crenshaw has a true gift of building relationships with students and serving as a role model in their lives,” Superintendent Collins-Hart said. “I believe any educator could learn from his ability to connect with students and inspire them to bring positivity to the classroom and experience success.”
