Hazelwood East To Hosts Special Olympics Event

Hazelwood East High School will welcome students from area elementary schools to a Special Olympics track meet on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 1  p.m.

This is the 13th year the school has hosted a track meet with events such as the 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter races, low-motor runs, standing long jump, running long jump, tennis ball throw, softball throw and events for smaller children.

Opening ceremonies, which includes the lighting of the torch, begin at 10:15 a.m.

More than 180 youngsters are expected. Participating area schools include Ackerman, Northview, Washington and Bel-Ridge. Participating schools from the Hazelwood School District include Barrington, Brown, Grannemann, Lawson, Larimore, Twillman, Jamestown, Garrett and Russell.

Students and staff from Hazelwood East High will spend the day as volunteers to help with events, activities and crafts in the Olympic Village, providing hospitality to the athletes and more.

Every athlete will take home a medal or a ribbon to signify achievement. Hundreds of athletes take part in the events each year from schools throughout the District, St. Louis County and those served by Special School District of St. Louis County.
