Hazelwood West Wins First State

Title Since ‘85; IWA Adds Another

In the winter of 1955 Hazelwood West won their second state title as the Wildcats won Class 4A Wrestling eight years after winning (single class) Softball.

In the same time span, Incarnate Word Academy won four State Girls Volleyball titles since 1976. Moreover, IWA was in the middle of a winning five consecutive state titles (1982-1986).

Since then, IWA completed their Girls Volleyball five-peat and won 11 titles, second in state to Hermann (13), but none since 2005. Girls Soccer owns a Missouri State High School Activities Association record nine titles (1989-2009) and last March (16) just won their MSHSAA record 10th Girls Basketball title (since 1995). That is 30 State Titles, most by any St. Louis County high school north of Olive Boulevard.

May 25 ended a 34-year, three-month State title drought for Hazelwood West when Boys Track And Field won Class Five State. The Wildcats reached the top at state after taking third in District Four, May 11 at Pattonville Stadium and second in Sectional Two May 18 at Lafayette. The ‘Cats scored 66 points in the State Championship, 17 better than Lee’s Summit North

JUSTIN ROBINSON LEADS HAZELWOOD WEST — Junior Justin Robinson scored more than half of the 66 points as he repeated in the 200-Meter Dash and the 400-Meter Dash, won his first title in the 100-Meter Dash and anchored the state winning 4×200-Meter Relay. Robinson set a new State All-Class Record in the 400-Meter Dash, breaking his own Class Five mark last year and the 2003 All Class Record set by Jefferson City’s Domenik Patterson.

Robinson is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Year. On June 8 at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, According to STLToday.com, Robinson set a new world under 18 record in the 400-Meter Dash (44.84 seconds) surpassing the 1995 record (45.14 seconds) set by Obea Moore and Robinson’s mark is the second fasted to Darrell Robinson (1982-44.69 seconds).

Hazelwood West won Suburban Green Pool Boys Tennis.

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY was 30-2 in Girls Basketball in winning the Metro Women’s Athletic Association and Class Four Girls State titles. That is three state titles in a row, winning six in their last seven years, eight in their last 10 and nine in their last 14. Senior Marisa Warren, who is heading to DePaul University in Chicago, is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Girls’ Player of the Year.

Junior Scout Regular is the first IWA Girls State champion Track Athlete when she won the Class Four 100-Meter Hurdles as she ran it in 14.13 seconds. Junior Freestyle Swimmer by winning her third Class One State title in two years by repeating in the 100-yard Freestyle.

IWA shared the MWAA Softball title with Cur Jesu and St. Joseph’s Academy and was quarterfinalists in Class Three Girls Volleyball and Girls’ Soccer.

McCLUER NORTH took fourth in state in Girls’ Wrestling, led by sophomore Natalie Schaljo, 131-pound runner up. McCluer North won the Class Five Girls 4×100, 4×200-Meter Relays, and the Class Five Boys 4×400-Meter Relay while junior Lauryn Taylor won the Girls Class Five 100-Meter Dash. McCluer North won Suburban Red Pool Boys Basketball and Suburban Green Pool Girls Soccer and was a Class Five Boys Basketball Quarterfinalist.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL won Suburban XII North Football, their eighth consecutive conference title, and Suburban Blue Pool Girls Tennis, and was a Class Five Girls Basketball Quarterfinalist. Senior Danielle Frank ends her prep career by winning the Class Five 200-Meter Dash.
