‘INDECENT’ AT THE GRANDEL IN GRAND CENTER JUNE 20-30

Winner of numerous awards including a Tony-Winning run on Broadway, “Indecent” by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, is the true story of a groundbreaking scandalous play and the courageous artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it. It will play at The Grandel in Grand Center, June 20-30

After a rapturous reception in Europe, Sholem Asch’s drama, “God of Vengeance” debuted on Broadway in 1923 at a time when waves of immigrants were changing the face of America. This revolutionary love story, that celebrated Yiddish language and unconventional passion, was forced from the stage by a fearful and reactionary public. Its fate, and that of the actors who cherished it even as they confronted the horrors of the Nazi onslaught, are the subject of “Indecent.”

Seven Actors and three musicians play a myriad of roles across continents and decades. For more information: maxandlouie.com/shows/indecent/

GERMAN ABOLITIONISTS OF MISSOURI’ AT ART CENTER JUNE 20-23

Gitana Productions will present An Amazing Story: German Abolitionists of Missouri, an original play inspired by the amazing stories of remarkable German immigrants who were also leading abolitionists in Missouri, at Kranzberg Art Center, 501 N. Grand Blvd, Thursday, June 20 through Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m., and performances on Sunday, June 23 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Following each performance there will be a question and answer session with actors, playwright and historians. Tickets can be purchased for $20 at metrotix.com.

Germans came to America in the 1800s seeking freedom from oppression in Prussia. Remarkably, many German immigrants, who often spoke no English, recognized that the hope for a growing democracy in America could only be realized if slavery was abolished. Often threatened and even run out of town by Missouri slaveholders, these men and women even started newspapers to spread their ideals for a color-blind democracy. While many German immigrants who settled in the Midwest before and after the Civil War staunchly defended freedom for slaves, some chose to set aside those values to survive. Those tensions, with roots in the past, continue today within many American cultural groups. Using the lens of history, the original performance will bring to life what it means to strive for social justice for “others” while also advocating for one’s own cultural group.

For more information about attending or booking the play, visit www.gitana-inc.org or contact info@gitana-inc.org or 314-721-6556. Gitana is supported in part by the Missouri Arts Council. Regional Arts Commission and the Missouri Humanities Council.

19TH ANNUAL POND-O-RAMA TOUR JUNE 22-23

The St. Louis Water Gardening Society will present its 19th annual water garden and pond tour, Pond-O-Rama, Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The 2019 tour will feature 20 private gardens owned and maintained by Society members.

Tickets covering both days of the tour are $15 each and are available at retail shops and garden centers throughout the metropolitan area. Everyone on the tour over age 18 requires a separate ticket.

The gardens are located throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, including in Illinois. This self-guided tour is arranged each day by geographic location. This year many of our water features are “over the top” and many of our members are new on Pond-O-Rama and excited to share their new ponds and waterfalls. A 15-year-old young man built a huge pond himself, inspired by his grandfather, that will be on tour. There is a massive waterfall and swimming pond by one of our most creative contractors.

There are also the quiet and quaint ponds and gentle streams to enjoy. Some members have new water gardens to share, and many have enhanced their current ponds and gardens into outdoor rooms and quaint woodland spaces. This year you will see some very unique and creative designs in waterfalls and ponds, gorgeous koi fish, and fantastic gardens. One garden is also on tour for the Master Gardeners’ tour, and one water garden on tour in Florissant was featured in St Louis Home and Lifestyle Magazine in the April 2019 issue.

This event, each year, is the only time St. Louis Water Garden Society members—as a group—open their gardens to the public. In addition to their water features, most of the hosts also are avid gardeners who maintain beautiful landscapes filled with perennials, annuals and shrubs. Our hosts will be available and delighted to share information and answer questions about their gardens, their water features, their fish, and their beautiful plants. This event provides funds for the St Louis Water Garden Society to continue their civic project to plant and maintain the reflecting pools at the Jewel Box in Forest Park. The tour ticket booklet gives location addresses, descriptions and driving directions. For more information, call (314) 995-2988. Tickets are available by mail order from the Society’s website at www.slwgs.org.
