A family Safety Day was hosted by the Hazelwood Firefighters’ Community Outreach Program on June 23, at Hazelwood’s Firehouse #2, 6800 Howdershell Road, next to Howdershell Park.  Various sponsors supported the event which included 1-800 BOARD UP, Bolin Towing & Repair, Home Depot and SERVPRO.

The free event offered residents a great opportunity to meet the firefighter/paramedics who service their area with fire protection and EMS calls.  Parents and children alike enjoyed a personal tour of the fire trucks on display and got a black firefighter helmet to wear. Children had fun testing their skills during a game set up where they tried to aim a mini fire hose stream into small holes.

In addition, several organizations such as SSM Health DePaul Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center, HFD’s STARS Program, The Salvation Army, CRUSH and Bringing Families Together had tables set up with representatives on-hand to answer questions and give out informational literature.  Plus, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors were available to any property owners who needed them.

There were many activities for families to do throughout the event.  Firefighters demonstrated how they can cut a vehicle in order to get a crash victim out safely with as little movement as possible.  Starting a Noon, an Arch Air helicopter landed in the park’s field behind the Firehouse, giving everyone a chance to look inside and sit in the pilot’s seat.

At 1 p.m., the St. Louis Cardinals’ mascot Fredbird made his appearance and danced and took photos with participants.   From 1-3 p.m., kids were able to pet the animals provided by Cindy’s Zoo, enjoy pony rides, and watch a man make balloon animals.  And, free hot dogs, chips, and bottled waters were provided for everyone. There was also a bounce house and the park’s Ninja Warrior obstacle course adding to the day’s fun.  The Hazelwood Police Department also had a K-9 and his handler there.
