Florissant Valley Historical Society House Tour May 17 To Include Nature Lodge
The Florissant Valley Historical Society will hold its annual house tour on Sunday, May 17, from noon-5 p.m. Ten homes or buildings will be featured including the new nature lodge at Sunset Park.
Tickets for the house tour are $12 and are available at Korte’s, 610 rue St. Dennis or by sending a check to: Florissant Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 298, Florissant, Mo. 63032.
These locations are on the tour:
o Scognamiglio, 2070 Pyrenees Dr. This five-bedroom, three-bath home plus a furnished lower level is filled with numerous antiques and many collectribles. The garden features a pond, and furnished playhouse.
o Chappel House, 4560 Washington St. Four rooms of this 1850 house are devoted to the sale of original work for 50 local artists including jewelry, pottery, hand blown glass, stained glass and paintings. Register for free drawings of original pieces.
o Taille de Noyer, McCluer High School Campus, 1896 S. Florissant Rd. This more than 200 year old home that werves as the museum and headquarters for the Florissant Valley Historical Society will offer guests an opportunity to “sit a spell” and enjoy a complimentary homemade dessert and then tour all four floors of this community treasure.
o Bennett, 775 rue St. Marie. This two bedroom home built in 1951 boasts a finished attic space and lower level. Contemporary and modern in style with a shabby chic look on the interior and a deck over-looking a landscaped yard.
o Lynn, 349 Washington St. A charming home build by James Settle in 1912 at a cost of $2,300 – note the special millwork on the ceiling in the living and dining rooms. James Settle served briefly as mayor of Florissant and was also a well known lawyer and state legislator. His desk, chair and library table are on display at Taille de Noyer.
o Hoffman, 306 rue St. Louis St. Tax records indicate this home was built in 1833, but architectural details suggest a later date, possibly 1840-1850. The house was built in various stages including a third story by the present owners. The garden is basic English with various ornamental trees, boxwoods, and native Missouri ferns. Some peonies are more than 100 years old.
o Sacred Heart Museum, 751 N. Jefferson St. (lower level of Rectory-south side). Opened in 2000, the museum houses many pieces of memorabilia from both Sacred Heart and North American Martyrs. Souvenirs of the parish will be on display.
o Zykan, 1380 rue St. Joseph St. This unfurnished home is for sale, but today Joe and Grace Zykan invite you to visit with them and enjoy family pictures, Florissant history memorabilia, a collection of Campbell Soup items and a chance to win a spring flower.
o St. Stanislaus Museum, 3030 Charbonnier Rd. Known as the Aubuchon-Teson farm house and built in the mid 1800s, it is now the home of the St. Stanislaus Historical Museum Society. Displays include a tool collection, photos and maps of early Florissant and Indian artifacts.
o Florissant Nature Lodge, 2300 Sunset Park Dr. Recently completed, the lodge offers a beautiful view of the Missouri River. Members of the St. Louis Woodcarving Club will be displaying their work and giving demonstrations.
