‘From Sea to Shining Sea’ Concert by Northwinds Concert Band

Under the direction of Larry Marsh, Northwinds Concert Band will present a “Sunday at the Pops” concert on Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre. The “From Sea to Shining Sea” concert will celebrate the landscapes of America, both in time and place and promises thrills and a wild ride for the audience.

In addition to a lovely arrangement of “Autumn Leaves,” and “Until September” by John Barry, the concert includes Robert Sheldon’s spirited new composition of Blue Ridge Mountain folk songs. The essence of America is captured in “Liberty,” a profound new work by Rossano Galante. The Pony Express’ awe-inspiring legacy comes alive in William Owens’ “Across the Plains.”

Northwinds welcomes guest violin soloist — and Florissant native — Leah McGougan Poe. Poe will play Miklos Rosza’s beautiful score for the1970 film “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,” a lovely, sentimental work by Italian composer Enrico Toselli, and John Williams’s haunting theme from “Schindler’s List.” Music from Broadway and film will round out the program.

Northwinds is a program of Ferguson-Florissant’s Marketing and Communications Department, and Maestro Marsh is celebrating his 51st year of association with the school district, including 35 years as conductor of the Northwinds ensemble.
