The NEW location for the City of Hazelwood’s 8th Annual Recycle Day is MERS Goodwill, 5665 St. Louis Mills Boulevard, which is across the highway from St. Louis Outlet Mall – off Highway 370. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2018, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Hazelwood residents are urged to get rid of unwanted electronics and other household junk that are cluttering their homes and bring them to the event. Admission is free and open to the public.

The City of Hazelwood will be partnering with the following vendors for the 2018 event: MERS/Goodwill; EPC, Inc.; Citishred; and Republic Services. Funding for this project is being provided through a grant from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

EPC will be collecting televisions and computer monitors for the cost of $15 each. (The $15 fee for dropping off each TV and computer monitor should be paid with cash only.) EPC charges a fee due to the cost of disposing hazardous materials in the CRT and LCD screens. Because EPC takes data security seriously, any data found in electronic devices dropped off for recycling is destroyed to protect the privacy of its customers.

Most electronics are 100% recyclable. EPC recovers and separates raw materials such as glass, copper, aluminum, tin, steel, iron, plastic, silver, platinum and gold. These materials are then directed to downstream vendors to use in refurbished or new products. All EPC recycling processes adhere to the Basil Action Network (BAN) e-Steward Guidelines.

Nearly all things collected by MERS/Goodwill use a power cord or batteries. Items accepted on September 15 include the following: radios; stereos; VCR/DVD/CD players; computer keyboards/printers; small kitchen appliances; microwaves; fax machines; dehumidiers; cameras; and power tools. Other products include furniture, baby items, home medical equipment, athletic equipment, books and games; cookware, dishware, glassware, antiques/collectibles, household/domestics, as well as clothing/accessories/shoes. At no cost.

In addition, Citishred will be on-site to shred personal documents the entire time and Republic Waste Services will provide dumpsters for discarding single-stream recycling materials. At no cost.

Items NOT accepted by event vendors include the following: major appliances; mattresses/box springs; car parts/tires; piano/organs; light bulbs; alkaline batteries; smoke detectors; thermostats; construction/building materials; gas-powered mowers/tools; and hazardoius materials (paints, solvents, chemicals, etc.)

In 2011, the City of Hazelwood created an ad-hoc volunteer Green Committee made up of residents, business leaders and elected officials. “The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at City Hall, starting at 5 p.m. Anyone interested in sharing green ideas is welcome to attend and become a member,” said Hazelwood Green Committee chairman Ron Darling.

Hazelwood’s Recycle Day will be set up to minimize long waits. Event organizers will be stacking vehicles in multiple lanes to reduce waiting time at MERS/Goodwill, 5665 St. Louis Mills Blvd., from 9 am to 2 pm. The goal is to have people drive up to the vendor’s station, stop and wait for the volunteers to unload their recyclables, and then drive away.
