The University of Kansas Track & Field Relays is not just for colleges and universities like St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley.
It is also for high schools as Hazelwood East, McCluer North and McCluer will participate. The meet began April 15 and will end April 18, and unattached or club athletes will also be involved.
Joining Florissant Valley in the college meet at the 82nd annual are Lindenwood University, McKendree University, Missouri S & T (formerly Missouri-Rolla) and St. Louis University. Joining East, McCluer North and McCluer are DeSmet, St. Louis University High, Parkway Central, Lindbergh and St. Charles West. Start lists can be found on www.kuathletics.com or www.kansasrelays.com.
Hazelwood East head coach Daryl Levy said the Spartans entry into last year’s Kansas Relays was a good stepping stone to last year’s second place finish to Raytown South in the Missouri Class Four State meet. “Our goal is to improve, take one meet at a time,” said Levy.” So far after competing in the Suburban North Conference Relays, April 4 at McCluer North, and at the Larry Doyle Invitational, in which East won April 11 at home, “we are better (time wise this year) than last year (going to the KU Relays). ” said Levy.
Levy said East is planning on competing in many relay events at the Kansas Relays as possible. The high schools in the area are competing against competition from outside St. Louis and from other states in order to be prepared for the road to the Missouri state championships, beginning with districts on May 9 for small schools and May 16 for large high schools..
Meanwhile Florissant Valley, a two-year college, is competing against four-year colleges and universities in hopes of qualifying some for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I outdoor meet, May 21-23 in Hutchinson, Kan.
