Rockhurst Has Won State Championships In Boys Swimming, Boys Soccer — So Far

BY JIM WIENERS

So far November has been a month to remember for Rockhurst High School, an all-boys Jesuit-Catholic high school in Kansas City, at the Kansas state line.

Two weeks ago at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex Rockhurst won their fourth straight Boys Swimming and Diving Championship. Each year Rockhurst winning margin got larger. Two weeks ago Rockhurst scored 313 points while second place Blue Springs scored 221.

Last Saturday Rockhurst won the Class Three Boys Soccer Championship. After winning Class Three, District 14 and defeating Lee’s Summit North, 4-1, Oak Park, 2-1 in overtime, and Springfield-Kickapoo, 6-2 — Rockhurst defeated St. Louis University High, 1-0. It was Rockhurst’s third state title and shares the honor with Cape Girardeau-Notre Dame, who won their second straight Class Two title two weeks ago, with the most state boys’ soccer titles outside of the St. Louis area.

This Saturday Rockhurst plays for the Class Six State Football title against Mehlville (see related article). Rockhurst swept through District Seven — defeating Lee’s Summit North, Joplin and 2006
champion Blue Springs South, who dealt Rockhurst a rare elimination in 2006 districts.

Rockhurst then routed three-time state champion Blue Springs, 42-17, and 2005 champion DeSmet, 67-7. In 2005 DeSmet, in a Semifinal game delayed because a squirrel chewed on a power line causing a power outage, defeated Rockhurst 59-39.

As a result Rockhurst, prior to this Saturday, has won 42 state titles, most by any Missouri State High School Activities Association member in all activities. That record surpasses the 41 overall titles won by University City High. That includes three titles in Boys Basketball (but was second in Class Five to McCluer North last March), nine in boys golf, 14 in tennis and two in boys outdoor track
