McCluer North Hosts Pre-Dist. Boys Hoop Showdown Against Central

McCluer North is the site of a key Suburban North Conference game, 6:30 p.m. Thursday that is a prelude to the upcoming Class Five, District Five Tournament.

McCluer North, ranked first in Class Five State Boys by the Associated Press, hosts Hazelwood Central, a team that is assured of finishing no worse than a share of first place in the Suburban North Conference. North was 20-2 overall — prior to Tuesday’s non-conference game at Metro Catholic Conference champion Chaminade, a team the Stars has won at the Pattonville and Chaminade Tournaments — and is 5-1 in the Suburban North, losing only to Hazelwood East. Central was 21-3 prior to Tuesday’s game at Lafayette — has wins over DeSmet, Webster Groves, Jefferson City, Columbia-Hickman and St. Charles High — is 1-1 against St. Charles West and the Hawks are 6-0 against Suburban North teams.

The Hazelwood Central-McCluer North game is the last game before the Class Five, District Five Tournament, which will be played at Hazelwood East. Hazelwood Central is seeded first and will play Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. against the winner of this Monday’s 1 p.m. game, fourth-seeded Riverview Gardens or fifth seeded Hazelwood East. McCluer North is seeded second and will play Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. against the winner of this Monday’s 3 p.m. game, third-seeded McCluer or sixth-seeded Hazelwood West.

The Class Five, District Five championship game is Feb. 23 at 5 p.m., with the winner to play the Class Five, District Six champion Feb. 28, 6 p.m. at Lindenwood University Performance Arena, St. Charles.

GIRLS CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT FIVE — Hazelwood East, fourth in state last year, is seeded first in Class Five, District Five, a tournament they will host, and will play Feb. 20, 5 p.m., against the winner of Saturday’s 2:30 game, fourth-seeded McCluer North or fifth-seeded McCluer. Hazelwood Central, who has two wins over Hazelwood East, is seeded second and will play Feb. 20, 7 p.m., against the winner of Saturday’s 1 p.m. game, third-seed Riverview Gardens or sixth-seeded Hazelwood West. The Class Five, District Five title game is Feb. 23, 7 p.m., and the winner plays the Class Five, District Six Champion Feb. 28, 7:45 p.m., at Lindenwood University Performance Arena, St. Charles.

Hazelwood East, 18-5 prior to last Tuesday’s game against McCluer South-Berkeley, is 5-1 in the Suburban North prior to Thursday’s home game against McCluer (3-3 SNC, 13-10 prior to last Tuesday). Riverview Gardens, 16-5 prior to non-conference games against Wentzville-Holt (Feb. 12) and Cleveland-NJROTC (Feb. 13), takes a 5-1 Suburban North record to Thursday’s game at Hazelwood West. Hazelwood Central was 6-1 SNC, 17-5 overall prior to Feb. 9 and was to complete their schedule Wednesday against St. Joseph’s Academy while McCluer North was 4-3 SNC, 16-6 overall prior to last Tuesday’s final scheduled game against Gateway Tech.
