When the Missouri State High School Activities Association made Swimming And Diving a two-class sports that it was going to be girls only since there were 134 schools that fielded girls swimming while 109 fielded boys swimming and the minimum required is 129.

However, last April MSHSAA member schools voted 291-244 mandated that Boys Swimming and Diving be two classes regardless of the number of schools registered.

As a result, the MSHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships, which remains at the St, Peters Rec-Plex, will take place in three days instead of two. The Boys State Championships will take place Nov. 2-4 while the Girls State Championships will take place Feb. 15-17, 2018.

Schedules include Thursdays Class One Swimming Prelims (12 noon) and Diving (5:30), Fridays Class One Swimming Finals (10 a.m.) and Class Two Swimming Prelims (5 p.m.) and Saturdays Class Two Diving (9 a.m.) and Swimming Finals (3 p.m.). The 2018-19 State Championships will have Class Two first followed by Class One.

Boys Swimming and Diving will have 36 schools compete in Class Two including Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West and McCluer North while the rest will be in Class One including Hazelwood East, McCluer High and McCluer South-Berkeley.

Class Assignments for Girls Swimming and Diving will take place on Sept. 22. The largest 48 schools will be in Class Two while the rest will be in Class One. Schools mentioned that competed in Boys Swimming And Diving will compete in Girls along with schools that compete in Girls only (Trinity and Luth4eran North) as well as Girls only schools (Incarnate Word Academy).

Since there are no districts in Swimming and Diving qualifying for state will take place at meets during the season. Boys’ qualifying ends Oct.26 while Boys qualifying ends Feb. 7, 2018. Qualifying Standards for swimming times and diving points will be by gender, not enrollment classification.

McCLUER NORTH RELAYS — On Sept. 1 at 3:30, McCluer North will hold their annual relay events outside, at Bangert Park Pool. It is on New Florissant Road at the curve bend next to the Florissant Valley Branch of the St. Louis County Library. It is a four-team meet, weather permitting, with CBC, Hazelwood Central and Lutheran High St. Charles County competing against the Stars. This will be the third year in a row the McCluer North will host the relays at Bangert while the other home meets will be at the Florissant James Eagan Civic Center.
