by Jim Wieners
Trinity Catholic High School and McCluer South-Berkeley Football went the farthest in the State Football Playoff Championships last season from North County.
In addition, is this what they get to start the 2017 season, the first week off? They Do.
Trinity could not find a replacement for St. Louis Priory after the Titans won last year 56-0. Priory scheduled Clayton for their opener instead.
MS-Berkeley could not find a replacement for Northwest Academy of Law after the Bulldogs won by forfeit win last year. Northwest Academy is not fielding a team this year so they are co-opting with Sumner. Therefore, with Northwest Academy and Sumner being in Class Two, District Two, which includes Trinity and Lutheran North, the top-ranked team gets a first-round playoff bye Oct. 20-21.
As a result, Trinity, which is in the St. Dominic Jamboree Friday Aug. 11, will open the season at home Aug. 25 in a 7 p.m. kickoff against Duchesne. Last year Trinity was 12-1 and Class Two State Runner Up, losing 26-18 to six-time State Champion Lamar. Duchesne, 3-7 in 2016, opens at home against 3-7 St. Charles High.7 p.m. Aug. 18
Also, MS-Berkeley, which will be with McCluer High (see feature article) in the annual Kirkwood Jamboree Friday at 6 p.m., will open the season Aug. 25 with a 4:15 after school game at McCluer North Stars Stadium (see feature article).. Last year MS-Berkeley was 12-1 and a Class Three State Semifinalist losing at home 42-0 to eventual three-time State Champion Monett.
Trinity will play eight games before district play begins. The Titans have a new opponent on Sept. 29, a 7 p.m. road game against Columbia-Fr. Tolton Regional Catholic replacing John F. Kennedy, which closed for good after the end of last school year. Trinity will be on the road at Cardinal Ritter for a 7 p.m. game on Sept. 1.
MS-Berkeley will play seven games before districts begin Oct. 20-21. The Bulldogs could not find a week seven replacement for Maplewood-Richmond Heights, which dropped football after the 2014 season and there is still no football at M-RH. MS-Berkeley will have an after school home opener Sept. 1, 4:15 against Orchard Farm.
Trinity will have to replace Brendan Larkin, four field goals and 69 extra points, Torre Boland, 16 touchdowns including 12 rushing on 55 carries for 472 yards, and Jabriel Green, 194 total tackles including 20 quarterback sacks, to name a few due to graduation.
MS-Berkeley will also have to replace key graduates including Devon Blanchard, 86 carries for 690 yards and 13 touchdowns, and John White, 24 pass receptions for 561 yards and seven touchdowns.
