The MLK celebration was held Sunday, March 5 and is an annual event sponsored by North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice and St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

This has been a joint celebration for the last 18 years on the Sunday around Dr. King’s birthday but the originally scheduled January 15 date was canceled due to the icy roadway conditions.

The title of this year’s celebration was “A Legacy of Service.” It was held at Third Presbyterian Church in Moline Acres. The Keynote Speaker was Rev. Cedric Portis, Pastor of Third Presbyterian Church, who is also the pastor of one of NCCU’s 23 churches.  The church’s choir provided the music for this event.

The awards were presented by Rance Thomas, President of NCCU, who shared his experience of having dinner with Mrs. Coretta Scott King at the home of the President of Principia College in Elsa, IL.12 years ago.

“It was a great honor to dine and talk with her during the Distinguished Speaker event and present her with Elijah Lovejoy Memorial’s Human Rights Award.  This happened just a few weeks after I was elected president of the Memorial before an overflow crowd of more than 1500 people.  It was very moving and motivating to hear first hand about some of the work of Dr. King.  It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life.”
